my favorite road frame was a simple Specialized Allez, did very well on it and it just had a great feel from crits to long stage races. Although my favorite TT bike was the Aegis.
|
My fav was a old late 80's Motobecane Grand Record with Reynolds 531

I also suspect that those pictures of smitty doing D.H. are photoshopped. |

Smitty.. you see many old frames for sale overseas? I'm alway suprised how tough it is to find 'vintage' stuff here. I suspect there's a lot of really cool stuff sitting in garages and basements. I've been on the lookout for an older cyclocross frame to build up... haven't seen a lot of good candidates. |

this is actually a very flat bit of singletrack that I rotated to appear as a DH run, and the bike is really a Kona Stinky Jr since I am only 4' 11" and I tell people I am 6' 2". ha ha Merry Christmas fellas. SmileWavy |

The last time I rode extensively carbon - as in owned - 1987. There's been a few since then, for about a half-year's time. And did I not say I haven't ridden many bikes in the last twenty years? That includes later carbon which wasn't as solid to me as the old Peugeot. I did not say "all" later carbon is flimsy. As far as getting a dog, you should do it. Bikes aside, you'll at least have something to ride when you finish exciting yourself with your B.S. meter. No big deal...happens all the time. SmileWavy |
Have fun stopping w/ those Campy Delta brakes, Erik-- I've heard they are horrible compared w/ any good dual pivot brake.
|
Yeah I know they are not that great .. but they are sexy and they are period correct for the frame so... I'll make do my racing high speed low drag days are over anyhow now it's all for fun so they will be fine for my intended use. :) but you are correct compared to the stuff we can get today they SUCK! :) ahahaha

I like classic and retro bikes. I'm a big steel fan. Here is my Shogun single speed: Lugged Chromo, UniGlide rear hub respaced for proper chainline. The stem and bars definately are not period correct, and are a tad high but they are comfortable. I can't stand riding on the platforms but this is a commuter, so they do have their benefits. Sometimes I do take this bike on longer 30-50mi rides, but much less now that I have a more "proper" road bike again.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167179963.jpg Here's the newer steed: Full 105, Speedplay Frogs, True Temper frame w/ Ritchey drop outs, Profile CF fork, Mavics, Selle Italia seat. It came as a triple but I really don't use the small ring even w/ a tall cassette. I'm thinking of putting on a double, but on those long rides on cold days, sometimes the little ring is handy. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1167180964.jpg |

Frame material is one part of the equation. I can design a frame out of any material that will be stiff is a board, or flexy like a flier (Alan anyone?). Devil is in the details. I still maintain that under my 6'1" 175# body, my 61.5cm Moots VaMoots was the all around best road bike I ever road. The Rivendell was sweet too, but not such a scalpel. The carbon bikes I rode (admittedly back in the 80's and 90's) left me unimpressed, and more importantly, didn't inspire me to ride. |
Eric those are some nice rides!
Favorite frame? That would be what ever bike I am currently riding which can chnage at any time. Currently it is an S works Roubaix and a R3. |
