The new carbon bikes are incredible. The two frames I am riding had won races in the '06 pro peleton.

There is a big difference between a Pro level bike and the typical road bike these days if my experience are any indication. Extremely LWT and also incredibly stiff while still offering a comfortable/compliant ride that is hard to believe.

Durability? I don't think there is any question that the carbon bikes are "durable enough". Rides like Paris/Roubaix pretty silenced that criticism. I took one of my carbon frames on a 30 mile downhill section of a local adventure race (and the only road bike frame there) and easily finished in the top 20, no worse for the wear.

Big difference in price and ride between my Roubaix Pro and the S Works Roubaix. Kinda like the difference between Mazda Miata and a Cayman S

The R3 I'm riding now is by far one of the the stiffest frames available and one of the lightest at under under 900g. Pretty easy to build a sub 15# bike when you are starting with a 2# frame.

Cool thing about the bike industry is you really can by all the technology that the Pros are currently using. Kinda like getting to buy one of the new Porsche LM Spyders for use on your local track!

Funny guy...about the same as a nice set of Fuchs

Retail on the R3 is $2800 and Roubaix is $3300 this year. That is just for the frame/fork/seatpost combo not something you can actaully ride out the store. But does anyone actually pay retail? No way I would for bike parts. 1/2 retail is more the going rate.

I figure since my last road frame, (a steel Peugeot) lasted me 28 years with the obvious discounts these are money well spent

Well here she is so far.....

I sold my deltas and reallocated the cash towards more C- Record kit.. deltas don't stop all that well anyhow andthe price I was given for them was too good to pass up. 1st Gen C- Record stuff is bring BIG money it's like real RS/RSR stuff i replaced them with some used Record single pivot stoppers.
I have NOS C- record shifters and front D as well as a seat post on the way. I also have a solid white San Marco saddle that will be going on it. I am having a new wheel set built up from NOS C-record 7 spd hubs on Campy Omega hoops all for the cash I got for the deltas!!!!
I have some good ole classic deep drop Cinelli mod 66/44 on there.

Here she is so far she'll look SO MUCH better once the period correct wheel set is on there with black wheels and not the nasty yellow Vittorias.

I finally moved into the 21st century and bought a new bike. Here's my early 90's Rockhopper with street tires and toe clip pedals (for use as a pit bike) and my new GF Paragon. I made a few changes before picking it up like 180mm XT cranks, 11-23T cassette (cause Houston is fffflllaaattt, except for ravines), and a Pop-loc. Even with the front suspension and 29" tires it's 2-3 lbs lighter.



This second pic is my old road bike with Campy super record. Note the hand stitched leather bar wrap! It's pretty much relagated to art.

Nice Old rig you have there!!! I love the old bikes!

Man I wish I could join you Smitty........ but I think I have lost the skills.

I'll stick to the road from now on.

Here is my bike as of today..... I have run some of the cable sheathing ( haven't cut the rear yet ) and all but not the cables...it's still not done but getting there. I still need the front D, seatpost,chain & freewheel to get in. Everyday I get a little closer.

I just found out my old Peugeot carbon fiber is a tad bit rare. A bike shop owner I described it to suggested it as the bicycle equivalent of the Renault R5 Turbo. I don't know about that, but I do know it weighs 18 lbs., which isn't bad for a 1986 bicycle.

It looks like this, except the brake cables aren't exposed, and the brake hoods are black:



Thank goodness I didn't sell this as I planned. I think I'll instead restore it.

yeah Eric I wish you were here bro. On your raod bike, this may be just me but I would shorten the housing on the rear brake. You may find that the bend at the seatpost is too great and the resistance can cause the caliper to push to the side. =o) The bike looks great! Look pedals?

Yeah I'd love to hit the roads there on the road bike maybe shoot over to the black forrest area and ride those hills!
I have not trimmed the rear housing yet...I just routed it through the frame. yeah the pedals are some old crap i have sitting around.. I have a newer set of Dura Ace I like much better. They are smaller and they do not have the sweet purple color hahaha! but i haven't been able to find them in my piles of bike junk yet they may be in the hidden some place. Do you still have your road rig?

Yeah I knew you had a rare bike from the moment you mentioned what it was.. that's why I was trying to figure out it was really a carbone Peugeot. You should keep it and ride it on nice days I would have bought it in a SCOND! if it were my size i tried to get the wife to say she'd ride it but no go she doesn't seem to like race bike riding positions

no Eric I sold the Allez as it was just about 2cm too small...need a 60. I will be looking to get another road bike in a year or so, have to get through the move and family issue first.
