My favorite is from a little town in Iowa - I don't think that's what your looking for though.

The best pizza in the Bay area was at a little hole in the wall place in Mt. View, just off Castro street, DJ's Pizza. Unfortunately the owner fancied himself a day trader, and neglected the place right out of business.

As far as chains go, Round Table is better than most, but it depends on the store. I haven't found another good hole in the wall place yet, because my wife only likes Round Table.

We finally resorted to making our own. My favorite would be Applewood's in Menlo Park. Niebaum-Coppola and il Fornaio in downtown Palo Alto are decent (but pricey) and try to stay closer to what you'd be served when you order pizza in Italy.

it'll be interesting to hear what other people think.

tom wow! thats a blast from the past, DJ's... There was one in downtown sunnyvale too. my paper route was on the other side of the place from my house. i never seemed to make any money because I'd stop by there on my way home from collecting and place astroids. great pizza, bad location.

tha owner was a dirt biker too, he used to ride enduros with our family.

How about Emperor Norton's? I don't know if it's a chain or not...the only location I know of is in S. San Jose off Bernal St.

It's been a long time since I lived in the Bay Area but I do remember thier pizza being pretty good.

Different owner I think. The guy I am thining of is named Larry. I worked there for extra cash when I was in the Navy at Moffett, probably 1989, and again while I was in college. At the time I worked in the Mt View store, that was the only one he owned. He bought the Sunnyvale location a year or so later, and it was out of business within 2 years. It is now a resturant, called "Gumba's". The Mt View location held out another year or so. The place was empty, last time I was in the area.

I have eaten at Vito's in Newark, and Mission Pizza both in Newark and in Fremont, and they are pretty good.

The Cheeseboard co-operative on Shattuck in N. Berkeley, great take-out pizza and cheese and punky hippies. For eat-in, Zachary's deep-dish pizza on Solano in Albany.

Buffalo Bills in Hayward has ok pizza and other stuff - great microbrews though! Tazmanian Devil and Pumpkin Ale (seasonal) are my favorites.

We used to hit the Zacharys in Berkeley. Then there was Blondie's on Telegraph. Not exactly good, but "interesting", especially at 1am.

Every time I go to San Francisco, I have to go to Blondies. Don't know why, just a tradition.

hehe, I just ate at Blondies tonite before seeing the Cal/Arizon game. You can't beat Blondies for the price and value. I have heard good things about Zacharys too, but I've never been there.

BTW Cal won, GO BEARS!

1. Viva Pizza in North Beach.
2. Zachary's.
3. North Beach Pizza.
4. Dario's on Bridgeway in Sausalito. But you have to know what to order there.

Ahh, pizza. My second-favorite subject.

Zachary's is great. Their deep-dish pizza especially.

But my absolute favorite is a square Sicilian pizza from Fiorillo's in Santa Clara. They won't serve it in the restaurant because they don't have any dishes that it will fit on. You have to get it to go.

I've been known to drive two hours each way down there from Davis for that stuff. It is that good.

Zachary's gets my vote too but there's this Greek place in San Mateo that has the garliciest pizza in the Bay Area. Great stuff but it makes my acid reflux act up sometihing fierce.
