Hmm. There's a guy here in Australia who has built a drag car, based on a Chev BelAir Coupe. I love the paint scheme!!
![]() It's running a blueprinted WWII Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 (27.7 litres!) Here's a link!

I'm guessing a WW II vintage Merlin engine in a marine configuration.
So, Is that the new Saab? Looks like its got the newest "drive by wire" setup. ![]() Les

Doubtful its a Rolls Royce Merlin......
A Packhard built Merlin with all the productionised improvements is more likely. Sorry to be pedantic but there is a difference. The P-51, in all versions other than the initial prototypes all ran either Allison V12s or Packhard Merlins.... When Packhard were designated to built the merlin they took a good long look at it and re engineered it to be much more produciton line friendly and therefore standardised. they are therefore not necessarily as ultimately powerful but they are more reliable and interchangeable. Rember RR at the time were not geared up to produce thousands of the things qyuickly.... The Rolls Royce version were mainly for the Spits, Mosquitoes and Lancasters and in ealrier marks the Hurricane. Mind you some of the better Spits were Packhard powered... On of the all time great internal combustion engines, right up there with the flat 6..... |

OK guys, it's not Packard and it's not RR, it's a Rover Meteor!
![]() Engine comes from brittish Centurion tank than Swedish army used in 60's. It's nothing else than de-tuned Merlin (lower C/R and no blower). He's really planing to build a rod on a Buick chassis! Here's link to the project: http://w1.136.telia.com/~u13603242/PICTLIB/Webmaster/v12/v12part1.htm http://w1.136.telia.com/~u13603242/PICTLIB/Webmaster/v12/Upd1/v12part2.htm http://w1.136.telia.com/~u13603242/PICTLIB/Webmaster/v12/upd2/v12part3.htm Would be neat thing to turbocharge ;-)

That pic would be a whole lot funnier if someone pulled the brick out from behind the wheel.

Hey Beepbeep! Great thread. Thanks for the look. I never thought of the land based uses of the mighty Merlin. The Canadian army used Centurians in the 50s & 60s (and when I was a kid, I had a model of a Centurian too). That'll be a scary piece of gear when its done.

I saw a site recently about a company in Australia that was building a drag car similar to that one that used a North American P-51 Mustang engine - 3,000 bhp! AND supposedly it was street legal. . . If I come across the bookmark, I'll post it.

That's the link I posted above.
It's Rod Hadfield's "Final Objective", which is street legal. The guy is a very famous rod builder... kinda like an Australian Boyd Coddington. He builds extreme cars, including a twin-blown Grandma Duck Model T.

Saw a monster garage with something that looked similar to the first photo.
Jesse James was driving a 3 wheel motorcycle that was using the engine out of a tractor trailer. Thing was all engine. He was sitting to the left of the transmission and the fuel tank was in back with a cut out for the differential. Don't know how much HP those things have but in something as light as it was that would be fast (ok the engine weighs a ton) but there really wasn't much more to it.
