I live on a highway....we had 6 inches of ICE ( we sometimes get snow).

So Mr Plow needs to clear the Shoulder of the Highway. I hear this ruckus outside and see my Mailbox is ripped off its post and is 12' away. The plow truck did not hit the mailbox, but 18" chunks of Ice were blown 20' on to my property. luckily, my wifes jeep was parked up to the garage and not in her usual spot. It would have needed Glass and body panels replaced judging from the size of the debris field. PennDOT stated they will replace the mailbox. Photos to follow later.

Damn, that sucks. Like you said, at least it was just a mailbox. Sounds like it's time for one of those 2'x2' brick mailboxes.

Gee, you are lucky. TWICE in the past two months (with 30-40”snow) the county plows drove by with the blades UP! Give me a break….

Grady, thats a lot of snow, but i will take snow over pack ice any day. some people call it sleet....but 6 inches of sleet really hurts the back. and the little snow mowers cant eat it.

In the 6th photo, you get an idea of how far the snow was thrown up the property.

That's part of the reason I moved from Boston to LA 28 years ago. Came back into town after being gone a month in February and the plows had packed about five feet of snow, now ice, up against my car. Took days to chip it out.

here in central new york we have plow truck drivers who seem to try to fling the snow as high and far as they can. my restaurant is on state route 5, in what i like to call downtown vernon. we have two traffic lights in town and i am located at the intersection of 5 and 31. the speed limit is 40 mph. the plows, when they catch the light green will roll through at 55mph or better. the object seemingly to get the snow better than halfway up my front door, which by the way is four steps up off the sidewalk. they like to fill in the cuts in the snowbanks that i have to dig out to allow my customers access from the street to the sidewalk.

unrelated item. two days ago on the local news channel they reported that the town of dewitt has decided to change the wording in the town code so as to replace the word "sidewalk" with the term[i am not making this up] "snow storage area". apparently they think this will reduce liability from not shoveling their sidewalks. i wonder what will happen when some hapless pedestrian gets tagged in the street because the town was too lax or cheap to remove the snow. back in the winter of '93 we had a monster snow storm that created snow banks seven feet high and about fifteen feet wide. lots of shoveling for me , i was tempted to get some gasoline and set fire to the snow banks. it is almost as bad this time. if i can find my camera i will try to post some pictures before my heart attacks me. wore out my snow shovel and had to go to a local hardware store , sears. and [ugh] walmart, only to find all of them sold out, except for kiddie size shovels. finally scored at lowes. |
