Here I am with my new mechanic. My son Blake. I just go to tell you how much fun it is to have him around at the track. he changes my brake pads, rotates my tires, helps bleed the brakes, he knows how to start the car and work the carbs from the back to keep it idling. What a thrill.

I used to do the same things for my father growing up. I guess it is in the blood.

Wow, are you guys ever lucky! My son, now 13 1/2, has absolutely NO interest in Porsches, motorcycles or racing. I've bought him a Yamaha YSR50 and a race kart... but he wants nothing to do with them. I'm not bummed at all... he's into other things which is fine by me. But, wow, would I ever have loved to be my kid when I was a kid :D

Here's the closest I can get him to one of the toys. Can you see how happy he is?

vintage...how old is your son?? he looks so young to know so much. But I guess I shouldn't under estimate him...my husband's nephew is in 7th grade and he reads books about porsches and knows a heck of a lot more specifics than we do...

Is that a Barbie Doll your son is hiding behind his back? That would explain a lot! :D ;)

My Son

Sarah,

My son is 8 years old. Almost 9. He has been working on my car or my fathers car since he could walk. He loves this sport.
Just this year I have started letting him do more things on his own. Don't get me wrong, I still double and triple check all his work, but he knows enough I can trust him around the car. I know he will not touch anything he does not know about. He knows that the safety of that car relates to my safety on the track. SO he takes it vary seriously.

He is even the one that talks to me during the races on my radio. He tells me whats going on behind me or beside me, when the green flag drops, when there is an accident somewhere. He takes it very seriously.

Anyways, sorry to ramble on. We have so much fun at the track together.

Lol, Tyson. Luckily he's a chip off the old block when it comes to the girls :)

Sarah 02-27-2004 12:07 PM

mark...your son sounds like what they call a "natural" at it. how cool that it has been passed from your dad to you to him.

No one in my family or my husbands family was really into cars (or fixing them I should say) so we seem to be learning new car related things all the time.

Our nephew (Joe) is the only one I could see leaving my 930 to because I know he already loves it and would take excellent care of it.

chibone_914 02-27-2004 12:20 PM

Damn Mike! Consider yourself very blessed to have a son that is willing to share your hobby with you. And I bet he loves it when you two work on it together.....

Thats the way it should be.

Vintage911Racer 02-27-2004 12:27 PM

Chibone_914,

He does love it. As do I. He especially loves that I have his name on the car as my mechanic.

Were in LA are you?

chibone_914 02-27-2004 12:39 PM

During the day, slaving over a hot keyboard here at Pelican. At night, East Los Angeles is home.

You never know how it's gonna be. My parents wanted me to play golf at the country club. I wanted to race. I ended up going my way on Sundays and they went theirs. I hitched a ride in somebody's station wagon to get my kart to the track.

On the part about having to get a license, they made me get one too. Only, so I could take the fammily station wagon to the track with an older karter as a "chaparone." I never did get any good at golf. Didn't go into the family business. Some kids are very different than their parents. Probably why I'm such an a$$ho!e today. I grew myself up.

Motion (Richard) should have been my dad. Except I'm old enough to be his. ;)

My stepson got the kart too. Although he was a good driver, he grew out of it and would rather play golf. GO FIGURE!

Someone said if you have one good friend in a lifetime, you were ahead of the game. If that happened to be your dad.....well, that's one in a 1000. Richard, all you can do is support your son in what his intersts are.

Vintage, you're the one in a 1000.

Vintage911Racer 02-27-2004 02:25 PM
