new cat in the house and it needs a name...

We got another cat from the local shelter yesterday. 5 year old spayed female black tabby that has been declawed (I hate it when people do that).

My son wants to name it "Tabby" .

How about "Cat", or "other cat", or "thing that doesn't come when you call it anyways so might as well just change name daily"......;)

You can just tell that I'm a big cat person, huh? :D

Schroedinger.
You'll probably wind up calling it "Schro"

Portia?

Eek?

Oreo?

And, my personal favorite, "Stinkyhead".

Calvis Ungula. (without claws)

Calvis for short.

Moses 03-23-2004 11:13 AM

For years all my pets bore the names of dead presidents or first ladies.

I still have a cat named Woodrow.

Rot 911 03-23-2004 11:15 AM

how about "soon to be dead cat?"

that was kinda the point of the post...odd that my son would want to name a spayed declawed female cat after Tabs (aka Tabby).

Calvis is interesting, but too close to my son's name (Calvin).

For reference, the other cats are:

Atilla - when we got her from the shelter in San Francisco, she was the only cat shredding the stuff in her cage. She now is a 10-year old cranky lady who prefers to stay outside.

Leela - a tiny one-eyed longhair cat from the Pasadena shelter. My wife got her becuase she said she didn't think anyone else would adopt a scrawny little one-eyed cat. She didn't mention the part about it biting anything that came close to it. It finally socialized after a year or two, and now is pretty mellow...Calvin can carry it around the house and it doesn't really car. We don't know how it lost its eye. The name is a Futurama reference.

Milo - black and white male that is skitterish, and seems to like women better than men (I guess the neutering didn't alter its sexual preference.

Previous cat names have been Pyewacket, Miles, Mingus, Sauza, Mojo, and Sparky.

I like cat names that are typically two-syllable and you can call them out.

I'm frequently out in the yard at dusk calling out: "Os-car! To-by!"

Sometimes they come running, sometimes they don't. We have a curfew for our cats and they always come in at night. Even if I have to go looking for them with a flashlight. My neighbors must think I'm nuts, rooting around in the bushes, calling out a couple of guys names.

That said, how about Janice or something?

rickeolis 03-23-2004 02:07 PM

Dogs much better-

I liked our cat when my wife got her. She was a kitten when we got her, and she managed to stay very small so we named her 'Mini', and she was very amusing for a while. Jet black and tiny.

Then after a couple of years she became a cat. Not so amusing anymore...

Now it seems I only call her 'pain in the &^%$ing @$$'. There's a name for ya'-

She throws up everywhere, goes into heat about 3 weeks of each month, and gets in my way at every turn- And God forbid I want to get close to my wife at times! The cat will have none of that, she squeezes in and meows like there's a dog nearby.

To top it off, this cat never preens, so she smells like a homeless guy and steals my snacks when I'm not watching...

I'll tell you this; I think she's hooked to the crack stuff! She wanders around like she's strung out all the time, doesn't take care of herself, and does nothing but complain all day long! Meow this and meow that-

I'm beginning to think that I might not be a cat person.

When we adopted a little tabby a number of years ago, the lady at the SPCA asked: "Do you want to change her name?" I asked: "What is her name, then?" ...."It's Kitty"., she said "Kind of common, don't you think?"
Well, I told her that Kitty would be fine, and "Kitty" is the best cat we've ever owned.

Moral: The name isn't as important as the cat. :)

I named my cat Arwen from the Lord of the Rings. The next cat may be named Strider.

I know..... Im wierd....... so what.

Do you have a picture of your new cat? That might bring in some more suggestions.

I have found that we hardly ever seem to call our pets by their actual name so you could really call her anything you want. ;)

For example:
Spanky - Spanks, Spanky-bob, BoBo, Bossman, Grandpoobah, etc...
Dakota - Kota, KoKo, crazy girl, crazy a**, Ali (as in Alligator), etc...
Bailey - Bailey-bob, Baybay, Fatsy, (and lots more), etc...

:D :D :D :D

In the Hollywood Hills, all the cats seem to be named "Lunch."

oldE 03-24-2004 10:34 AM

Nice. Real nice. Remind me to put you on my ignore list like tabs.

Nostatic, I had a cat named "Pal" a while back. But it was a male. I kinda liked that name. Current one is "Dahli." She's a Himalayan (sp?). Siamese colors and Persian hair. Makes an honest house cleaner out of me!

vash 03-24-2004 04:40 PM

how about naming the car after your bass. fender? gibson? sorry i dont know musical intruments anymore. hope i didnt just name a bunch of drum or trombone manufactures.

on a side note. with summer coming, how do you stay ahead of the shedding hair? my adopted cat & dog are going to really dig into my car mod money in the form of swifter pads. what a pain! i dont really remember this much hair!

nostatic 03-24-2004 05:52 PM

If I named if after my basses, it would be "Zon". Kind of a cool name. My son is being pretty insistent about "Tabby". He is complaining that he hasn't gotten to name any of the animals (which is true...but some of them we had before he was born). I'm just not sure about the kharmic balance...

Zeke 03-24-2004 06:32 PM

Tabitha from "Bewitched."

84porsche 03-24-2004 06:47 PM

Do something car related - "Speed Bump" would be cool.

pwd72s 03-24-2004 08:12 PM

Looks can play a part. One of ours was named "gray" by Cindy. Now we both wish we'd named her "smudge"...

derek murray 03-25-2004 07:27 AM

in order to keep some in-house continuity... how about 'gaucho' (my favourite steely dan album)

Schrup 03-25-2004 07:48 AM

See if he'll settle for Tabs, sounds like the head of a cathouse, "Madame Tabs".

juanbenae 03-25-2004 08:24 AM

wait a week or two and let the kat name itself. like when i 1st got my cat his name was bob-kat. 2 weeks in he became lyttles because he was dwarfed by my 105 lbs yellow lab at the time. to this day its lyttles,, except my old gram-mama still calls it bob because it was scroched into her mind that way. she still calls my current girlfriend annette, and annette was like three hags ago.

thanks ganny.....

does your boy know of tabs from here? if not let him do a search and see if he still wants the moniker

Just curious. People seem to love kicking 'ol Tabs around a bit. Here's what I know about him; He's smart, funny, abrasive and sarcastic as hell. He loves his pets and has a killer espresso machine. What's not to like?
