Ha ha - VW trying to punk Porsche on the Toureg/Cayenne
As reported in AutoWeek this week,
Porsche has a contract to buy the Golf engines for the Cayenne, 3.2 V6. Which was probably OK with Porsche when VW was using a 3.2 220 hp in the base Toureg (a few less hp than the VW Golf engine as used in the Cayenne). But now VW wants to/is going to update it's base Toureg with a 3.6, 270 hp, direct injection engine for late 2005. So the base Toureg will have a stronger, more advanced, bigger, better engine than the Cayenne! And Porsche is still stuck with its contract to buy all those wimpy 3.2 Golf engines! VW Punks Porsche. And firmly places the Cayenne in the Poseur Hall of Fame. |

Smart move on VW's part.
Their current V6 can barely move the truck out of its own way, and the V6 doesn't get much better mileage than the V8. But at least the Porsche will still have that fancy badge on it. Hee hee hee. Colin ('04 Touareg V8)

Is the 3.6, 270HP direct injection a diesel engine or gasoline?
I'd like to see a modern turbocharged diesel in one of those puppies. Good mileage and massive torque. ![]() |

gasoline engine basically straight out of the Jetta / Golf VR6
So lets put is this way. Reasons to buy the Porsche over the VW The Porsche has better brakes..... The Dub has the SAME EXACT brakes and the V6 model has smaller brakes actually. The Porsche has a better suspension.... Actually the Dub has the same suspension. The Porsche has a better transmission.... Again they are the same exact unit The Porsche has a better engine.... Actually unless you spend $20,000 more the Dub has a better engine So what does that leave. The Porsche a fancy and pretty badge on the front of it. Porsche also offers floor mats as a $200 OPTION Yep I would want to pay $55,000 (as seen at Hendrick Porsche Charlotte NC) for a VW powered Overweight bloated SUV that I have to spend $200 for floor mats. The Perfect Porsche for today's

Went for a ride in a Touareg this afternoon. Well appointed with leather, wood and aluminum accents. Also, beautifully put together with decent handling. The 6 cylinder is capable but a bit anemic. I understand why VW is moving up.

Go drive the Touareg TDI. 10 cylinder diesel engine with ~500 pounds of torque.
Will just about scare you.

Ummmm ..... does this have something to do with the 340HP, 0-60 in 6.7 second S?????? I've said all along the V6 Cayenne is a poser mobile. There is simply no question about that. I don't think they should have built it. In fact, I've heard Porsche of Austrailia will refuse to sell it!
![]() The S and Turbo are another matter. Beyond the mind-boggling performance, they look spectacular and a day cannot go by without unsolicited positive comments ...... sorry to burst yur bubble boys (maybe they know something you guys don't?) ![]() The VW is a nice vehicle. If I had been in the market for an SUV, I would've considered it. I was in the market for a Porsche though ....... ![]() Me, at speed: ![]() |

Curt for the $20,000 price difference I think I would rather buy a more capable SUV and then spend my $20,000 on a real sports car. Not some vehicle full of compromises that does nothing overly well.
No mater how good you think it is. I have no doubt it will push you back in the seat however the Porsche Touareg is still a top heavy truck that has to answer the laws of physics. I betcha I could have one on its roof in no time.

$20,000?
![]() ![]() ![]() "I betcha I could have one on its roof in no time." I seriously doubt that. PSM has a way of overcoming mere physics ..... ![]() "We're just settling back to enjoy the rest of the ride when Pfeifer announces that we're going to try it again. Except now he has dropped well behind the vehicle in front of us, and then he tips his right foot much closer to the floor. We're approaching 100 miles per hour when he repeats the back and forth and back and forth maneuver that might send any vehicle, especially an SUV, somersaulting off into the bush. The Cayenne responds like a jet fighter in dogfight mode. Yes, this is a real Porsche, even if it is has its engine in front, provides seating for five and has a hatchback roofline." This is actually a very interesting read for anyone truly interested in performance vehicles: http://www.izoom.com/cayenne_outback.html Last edited by cegerer; 04-16-2004 at 05:51 PM.. |

Well you must live in the bargin basement of the Porsche World because V6 porsches cost $55,000 and V8 porsches cost $79,000
Last Touareg I saw V8 was $48,000 and that was LOADED. No $200 floor mat option on that car. Yeah I could have one on it's roof. No sane person would truley attempt to put a vehicle on its roof at 100 mph by himself or with other passengers.

It is unlikely you could put it on its roof with PSM activated (short of hitting an obstruction). There is a yaw-sensor under the rear seats connected to a computer that also calculates steering angle, individual wheel speed, etc. The computer knows the correct relationship between the variables and instantaneously corrects if anything is out of sync. PSM will not allow the vehicle to spin - I've tried it on an iced-over parking lot. It takes a lot of the fun out of driving, but there is a manual override button .....

Here's one just for the Cayenne-haters ...... the Carrera GT being assembled alongside the Cayenne (with no VW's in sight!
