67-69 Camaros
This may be blasphemy, but I'm looking to buy a running 67-69 Camaro, in need of tingering for my son's first car. Don't know much about them in terms of car clubs, websites, etc. any suggestions?

'67-69 Camaros ... are like bellybuttons - everybody has one. Seem to be the hot rodders favorite.
I'm a Mustang man myself - resto-mod'd my '66 fastback in the early '90s. Personally, I think a vintage Mustang would be easier and cheaper to tinker with over the long run. Chevy engine parts are cheap, but not much else seems to be. A web search should yield a ton of Camaro clubs, vendors, etc.

I had a '68, neat car from a visual/viceral standpoint. Absolute junk from a design/build standpoint, NEVER again, I have seen the light

Honestly, I know nothing about Camaros. If it were me, I would build a Shelby replica. There's a couple running around L.A. Sweet cars, fast and not too expensive, either.

i do know that you can buy an entire crate motor from chevy for about $3500. hell, i bet p&C's for a 911 alone will cost that. 60's camaros are cool. i would find a 69, Z28.

Didn't mean it to be a slam on any Camaro owners. The cars have a style, heck I had one

I may actually look at mustangs as well. The first generation 67-69 camaros command quite a premium over the 70s and 80s, which you can get real cheap. Just starting to look at this point. He turns 16 in December, and I thought getting him into the process of looking for, working on and taking care of it over the summer, he'd develop a little appreciation and respect for the vehicle. Also, its something for he and I to work on together.

71 split front bumper Z28 rocks too. not many around. i think the 80's were scary for the camaro.

Great hair!
Yes, Rick: Shelby replicas akin to the original Shelby Mustangs that were based on the '66 model year. Last I checked on the Mustang board, there was about a handful in various states of assembly.

'65-66 Shelby Mustangs are easy to make - a few scoops, some stripes, sparse interior, and a couple bolt-on engine parts are about all it takes to "look" like a Shelby. They're all over the place actually.
'67-70s are a lot harder to fake because of some replacement body parts (fender extensions, bigger scoops, etc.). I've worked on a lot of early Mustangs and they are dirt simple to work on. Unless you get one that's been repaired - you'll always find rusted floors and door bottoms (easy to fix) ... everything else holds up well if you find a southern CA car. the inner cowls can be bad if the car sat under trees for a long time (junk collects and traps water). Camaros are about the same, but you need to worry about the rear window channel and package tray ('60s GMs are notorious for rear window channel rot). Any Mustang questions ... just ask ... I've totally restored mine and have worked on just about all the others. Gratuitous pic ... ![]()

Hugh - Will he earn the $$s for the car, or are you springing for it? I have an almost-14-year-old who wants a 65 Mustang. Now I just have to figure out how he's going to earn it.

His "currency" with me is good grades in school, and working on his Eagle Scout. His sister did the same thing, with grades and the Girl Scout "Gold" award which is equivalent to the Eagle. She pays for the gas and regular maintenance. My daughter has a part time job (she's 17) and she landed a job at a very well known accounting firm in downtown LA. I convinced her that it would look better on her resume' than a "Would you like fries with that?" job. I'll make my son do the same with a part-time job, but I want school to be the focus of his young life, not working to pay for an old car.

muscle car swapmeets... Probably pick up a good roller there. Dirt cheap and simple to work on. You'll get decapitated if you're looking for one that's complete. Pricing is way out of control on those.
Chevys are cool. rjp
