Enduring Lust Value Gone with the 993's?
I was aimlessly cruising in the carrera yesterday afternoon and ended up in the vicinity of a couple of high schools about the time class was letting out. (keep your smart remarks to yourself, gunga din.)
I've noticed this before - but I was blown away by the extent of the drooling over the carrera by these teenagers! The "nice ride" kinda catcalls were plentiful - from boys and girls alike. 993's - even the TT (and 996's I assume - I'm a little short on those right now) simply don't seem to have the same wow factor with the teenage crowd. Boxsters don't even draw a glance. I also assume that 964's would be treated like a carrera or any older 911. As I got thinking about this, it struck me that this is pretty amazing. This means that teenagers today are lusting after the same car that I lusted after 25 or more years ago! What other marque or model has that kinda lasting lust-value across multiple generations? This phenomena also suggests to me that the pre-993 cars (I'm waiting for confirmation about 964's) will probably hold better "investment value" than their successors. Think about it - we now have two generations behind us that are equally smitten (or thereabouts) with 911's as we were and will always have a 911 somewhere on their "wish list". 993's, 6's, 7's, boxsters, hummers, et al will come and go as flavor-of-the-month, 911's will endure.

Everything either looks like a melted Dove bar or really "edgy" these days (see my sig)...
"Classic" lines are what folks are trying to copy (unsuccessfully: PT Cruiser, T-bird, Mini, etc., etc., etc.). Hell, kids are still wearing hip-huggers. Old is in.

993s are, apart from the long noses, the best looking 911s, certainly better than 997s, I'd also say better looking than 964s.
Post 74 911 now have that classic look that removes it from the rich, flash/ show off tosser brigade car, so they are cool. Retro look is fashionable, classic is class. |

The Series G is the way to go; the 964-forward just looks derivative, a shadow of the glorious original. Even "non-car" people have the visceral response to the lines that set the standard.
Crusin' the high schools, eh? Oh, this will come up at a later date... JP

I share the same observation as you. I too cruise the local HS's looking for girls, ok...not really but damn, I should. Seems like the safest way to go (if they're over 18). Anyway yeah, the classic design of the 911 seems to be greatly popular among all generations. Today it seems cool to have something different than everyone else. Seems like most people now just drive all the same mass/cheaply produced crap, so when you see somethng different its a sight for sore eyes.
