The diner/service station/motel is a movie set, located just east of palmdale off of ave q. it seems like just about every tv commercial that's filmed in the desert is either filmed there, or at el mirage dry lake bed.
as for that road, it's the Angeles Crest highway. i was going to take it south, instead of 138 or 14, but didn't realize that 25 miles into it, it's closed. i took it up to the mount wilson observatory, and then went back home. it's the coolest 25 miles of road i've driven. definite porsche road. ![]()

I grew up on that road and the Angeles Crest Hwy starting in La Canada. It used to go all the way thru to Azusa.
I was a Kratka Ridge skier and worked at Newcomb's Ranch as a bartender when I was older. Bikes, motorcycles and hot rod VWs were my forte. My Dad, I and partners stripped the kitchen out of the Mt Wilson restaurant when it closed. We schlepped it up to the ski area and created the "Beer Cellar"....it was under the last operating single chair lift in the US. It ran on a Chrysler LaSalle 428 Hemi. Single barrel Carter carb that ran on propane. We also had rope tows up till the end. The Beer Cellar made killer hand made 1/2 pound burgers, draft beer and Rumplemintz schnapps. White death from the Black Forrest. The snow patterns changed and it closed. Last I heard, the lift house and the cellar burned down when a meth lab exploded......it was US Forrest Service land lease..... It was good times.

One of my best friends, a former Steeplechase race rider, is the track safety guru and chief race starter for the National Steeplechase Assn.
I've started a few races with him on the track. Amazing ballet of confusion.
