Something about this just doesn't sit well with me. Call me crazy, but this just doesn't seem like the proper way to be doing things if you're working on your own car.

Looks like natural selection to me. He should have diagonial cross bracing. When you go and seriously pull on an under carriage bolt with a 3 foot cheater bar, that whole think could fold over on itself. Also, I wouldn't drive up an unchanneled ramp like that, too easy to go off the edge.

Looks like it will fall over sideways when you slam the door shut.

That's definitely an accident waiting to happen. I think, properly engineered, it could be a great idea. I don't think that looks quite sound, though... Totally second Hugh's post...

I'm now thinking if he did not even bother measuring and spacing out the supports in the ramps evenly, what else has been hashed?
I think I will follow that thread keenly.

Also, the bolts in the cross "supports" look to have been designed to allow for the whole thing to be folded over laterally for easy storage.

Great way to avoid door dings. I love when the guy replies with " I thought only us from down here in the south did **** like that".

"folded over laterally" -- yes, that's exactly the problem. Easy for storage in your garage, but just as easy for yanking over with your breaker bar while you're under the thing. (shudder)

as a civil eng. at a MINIMUM you need more hardware at the connections, as it stands those single bolted corners are like hinges! it can fold over. wood is strong. but you gotta develop the system correctly.
funny, we have some crappy typist and spellers on this forum (i am the worst) but i think every response to that thread is a grammar teacher's nightmare. i would be pissed if my neighbor built such a hideous structure in my hood.

After selling cars for 5 years i have seen some pretty half-brained stuff on cars but this about takes the cake.
Well good luck to him and the HMO that will pay his hospital bills. Cheers, ADJ |
