Ya know, we are all quick to slam the Pepper-wagon. However, in the current economic atmosphere, Porsche needed to produce a car for the masses. The Cayenne greatly helped the company's financial bottom line.

Granted, I would much rather see Porsche produce something that would compete against the Lotus Elise (!) but that would be considered a 'nitche' market, and not really help their bottom line.

In simple economic terms, it is more profitable for Porsche to diversify their product line. The luxo SUV & 'luxo truck' (?) market is still hot. (The 'regular' SUV market may be slowing down a little, but the high end stuff is still doing well) Porsche already has a proven truck platform with the Cayenne. The car is selling well. So, why not expand that product line? If they keep the same drivetrain and chassis, the the cost of development is minimized, and the ROI is maximized.

The Purists may baulk at this concept, but it works. Give the people what they want. Apparently, in order to keep up with the Jones' everyone wanted a luxo-SUV. Now that "Soccer Mommy" takes the kids to practise in her Cayenne, "Golfer Daddy" figures he needs a Porsche truck to buy his plywood from Home Depot.

Betcha if they make it, it will sell well....

Z-Man a truck that starts at $55,000 and quickly climbs to almost $100,000 is not a truck for the masses.

Last new P-Car lot I was on (less than a month ago) had about 7 VW... I mean Porsche Cayenne's on the lot. Drove by yesterday and it looked like they where all still there.

So how many people want to buy one of those $50,000 pickups so they can throw some lumber in the back............

Why didn't they create a "side brand" that's owned by Porsche but sells such stuff. Then they wouldn't have to stick the Porsche name on it and still reap the profits from such vehicles.

You make some good points, but to me, Porsche has never been about the bottom line. obviously its something that cant be ignored, but racing is not profitable. I bring this up because of their impressive racing legacy. If they were historically concerned with the bottom line they would have never begun racing.
I sort of consider Porsche (read: pre 1990's Porsche) somewhere between Ferrari and the corvette. They build supercars, but not flashy, status symbol, over priced, supercars.
All zing, no bling as your signature says. I realize this is the last thing that is selling these days, but its one of the things that used to set Porsche apart from both the exotic manufacturers AND the mass producers.

From the picture it looks like the truck bed is pretty small - worthless for hauling lumber. Maybe a few bags of bark chips or fertilizer.

Domestic trucks can get pricey too - but for $40K you can choose from the best offered. The pcar truck looks to be a showroom gimick, not a working truck.

So you proved my point David. This is a truck that can not even be used as a truck and I am sure it will be priced in the same $55,000 to $90,000 price range.

Like the Cayenne it will used for nothing that it was "Intended" for and just be another blight on the Porsche name and legacy.

The photo is at least two years old. It was speculation on the part of some Geman auto magazine, as I recall.

My guess is that the 4-door Porsche sedan will appear before a pick-em up.
