I was run off the road once....no fun at all. Glad I sold the bike 20 years ago.

That's horrible. When you own a bike, it is not just yourself you have to worry about it, it is every other driver in the world that doesn't give a damn. Drive safe.

Shiit happens. Should we do internet research and find all the articles of people being maimed and disfigured that have been driving cars? If you don't want to accept the additional risks of riding a motorcycle, then don't ride one.

I owned a motorcycle for 3 days. On day one I broke my foot riding offroad (and rode it all the way back home with a broken foot). On day two, I put an ad up to sell it. On day three I sold it.
Very sad story. I had toyed with the idea of getting one for commuting to work, but that thread was a good reality check. |

That's a tough story to read.
You have to be ultra defensive when riding. I had a couple of close calls...don't even want to get into them but bottom line is there are alot a$$****s out there.

Unfortunatly, that happens all too often. I loved riding my bikes twenty years ago, back when the roads were not gridlocked. Now, I would never ride a bike on the public streets around here.

Some of my fondest memories are from my various trips up and down Hwy 101 between here and sunny California back in the seventies. Sleeping in a tent on the beach, anywhere I want. But that was (gulp) I guess that was twenty-five years ago. That was then, this is now.

Guess it all depends on where you live. Where I live there are winding, hilly roads in every direction with very little traffic. Been riding motorcycles since 1970 and don't plan on stopping now.

It just depends on what risks you find acceptable versus the pleasure it brings you. If you want complete safety quit driving, or doing anything else outdoors!

Kurt, it is location dependent. In LA, I think motorcycles are close to being suicidal.

That story was really horrific.
I've owned three motorcycles in L.A. I restricted my riding to early Sunday mornings on lesser-travelled roads (I lived on Mulholland at the time). Even then, people would drive as if you weren't there. Every once in a while, I miss having a crotch rocket, but there are so few circumstances where it's really safe to ride...

I didn't even read the original posted story, cuz I don't feel like I need to...
Like some other posters, I used to ride and during that time I had friends get launched in the air over cars that cut-off/t-boned them, broke bones including a guy who broke his back and was in a wheelchair for months (he recovered), massive 120mph road rash (he recovered too), and head/neck injuries (he didn't really recover). I laid my bike down once doing about 50mph and Got Religion as I saw oncoming traffic headed towards me. Fortunately I was wearing appropriate gear and was fine. Ironically, as a SoCal resident, I think that motorcycles are probably more fun and safer in a controlled racetrack environment than in day-to-day public road use! We have SO many incompetent drivers, unsafe vehicles, and neglected roads here that it is clearly not a matter of "if", but "when"...

Wait till Blueskyjaunte chimes in. If I recall correctly, he mentioned in another thread that he rides his bike wearing a handgun clearly visible in his belt. Ya gotta do what you gotta do not to get run over...
