911 As Fishing Car
So I drove from the bay Area up to the Yuba River yesterday to do a bit of fishing. And had a revelation.
The 911 isn't a half bad fishing car. Sure, it can't hold a strung-up flyrod and lacks a tailgate to sit on, but the reality is that a day of stream fishing for me is as much driving as fishing, and the blast up 80 and then out the 49 and 20 was fun. It wasn't even too bad on crappy dirt roads, as long as I placed the wheels carefully. The fishing - that was another story. Will try again in a couple weeks, the North Fork this time.

i can see where your coming from. back in highschool my only transportation was a trans am. so that became my fishing mobile, A great big cooler sat just right in the cramped back seat. sure didnt move around much packed with salmon.
it sure was fun sliding around those dirt back roads down to the river, kinda like burt reynolds in white lighting or such. If we ran late it sure could make up time on the highway. |

I totally agree. Discovered today that there's no rule to prevent me from partaking of two of my favorite things in all of life almost simultaneously -- photography and driving my 911. Cruise around scenic places, stop periodically, take pictures. Too easy. The only downside is that I feel pretty bad taking the Porsche on rough ground -- it just doesn't have the clearance to go some places that even my Honda can get to.

I used the 911 as a fishing car over the fourth of July. The rods lay nicely in under the front trunk, the rear seats fold down for a flat shelf for the tackle boxes. What more could you ask for?
Now I just have to wash off the mud................and I had just given it two coats of wax. ![]()

I've been fantasizing about a 911-powered VW Vanagon, though.

all my gLoomis rods are one piece units. but i dont flyfish, and i cant tow a bass boat with the pcar. hell, i am crappy fisherman too. but i love to try!
have you ever gone up to the russian river, near oroville during summer? i hooked into salmon big time there. my girlfriend was crying because her arms ached so bad from a 45 minute fight. i didnt have the proper hardware. i was basically using my toughest largemouth bass rods and reels. the fish was kicking her butt. it was a great time. where is the north fork? just moved here.

Haven't tried the Russian River.
I'm more comfortable on smaller streams with well-defined pocket water, pools, riffles, runs, etc. I know where the fish are and can be 70% certain they've seen my fly, the short ranges don't stress my feeble casting skills, and I can use a floating line / dry fly instead of throwing lead. With bigger rivers - like the Yuba below Hwy 20 - you often have to fish deep with a "search pattern" which leaves me pretty clueless. And with my light gear, a salmon would just break me off - heck a big bass would break me off (6-wt flyrod with #6 tippet). The problem w/ stream fishing from the SF Bay Area is that you have to drive pretty far to get to good water. Either 4+ hours north or 4+ hours east. The N. Fork of the Yuba is off Hwy 49 north of Grass Valley. I hear it is a decent smaller river, and it doesn't get much mention in the "where to fish" books. I've had good luck in the smaller streams around the Yosemite area. Small fish though - a 12" trout would be large there.

Yes, there are roof racks for skis, bikes, etc. available for the newer P cars.. and that toy 356 posted above is actually based on a real trailer available... Somewhere on the partsobsolete.com website there is a pic of a 356 with a canoe strapped to the roof as well....

older 911s have drip rails, so roof racks are an easy fit.

I keep a fishing rod and tackle in the trunk at all times. If traffic on the causeway gets backed up, I just pull off on the service road, roll one up and fish for a while till traffic is moving.
