OT: computer help please - Firewall

We have two computers sharing one internet connection at the moment. It's a high speed DSL connection. Sometimes when I go to shut down my computer I will get a message something like "there are other users logged onto this computer, are you sure you want to shut down?". This comes up a times when the other computer is not even on which makes me wonder if there is someone else meddling on this computer.

I have searched XP and have found this information:

To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall
Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.
You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing.
ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

The problem I have is that there is no advanced tab on my machine when I try to change the settings of my connection.

When I check on the machine at work, you can access it and firewall the computer.

Any help from the experts on this board would be appreciated.

Log in as "Administrator" or make your user a member of the administrative group. This should let your edit the properties.

Do you have multiple users setup in your computer?

If another user is signed on, and you signed on as well, then you will get that message when you sign off.

Just get one of the DSL/cable router/firewall combos. And if you go linux, may as well use one of the best 2 distributions - Slackware or Debian

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Under user accounts both users were listed as computer administrators. I do not get the advanced tab. I changed the other user to a limited account thinking that may change things but it did not.

I'd rather not load up my computer with other software if I can help it. Any other ideas?

As far as I know, we never have both of us on at once. You start the computer as one or the other, right?

If you have your accounts password protected and setup to suspend after x number of minutes this is going to happen unless your users log off the machine.

Im not a big fan of zonealarm. I know my way around a PC fairly well and I find that the decisions zonealarm forces you to make are not intuitive at all. I locked myself out of my own internet connection within a week of installing zonealarm. I brought the machine to its knees before I locked myself out. If you want a firewall, spring for a hardware firewall.

Well, how many users to you have set up on the XP machine that you keep on getting that message "there are other users logged onto this computer, are you sure you want to shut down?" That message has nothing to do with your network connection, it has to do with the other user thats still logged in on the computer.When I turn my PC on, I come up to a Welcome screen, that shows my 2 users that are set up, my wife, and my self. I can go into my own , log off, have a switch user window pop up, that allows me to return to the welcome screen, and log in under the wife side. You have to log off the other user before you can shut down the screen from your side, if not, that message will continue to come up.
