One of the problems are the credit reporting organizations themselves. The information is too freely disseminated and when a dubious loan is authorized, Experian and the rest shrug and disavow all responsibility. You can, however, notify them in writing that no information is to be given out unless personally authorized by you. That is a legal tactic and I highly recommend it. Make it return receipt requested and keep the signed receipts.

The entire credit reporting industry is poorly regulated and subject to error which, in most cases as applies to the individual "guilty until proven innocent". And as a whole, this practice of private information being shared without your consent predates the "Patriot Act", but was not lost on the writers of that legislation.

How many times do I have to call the freaking cable company or whatever for customer assistance and the guy or girl on the other end asks my social security number for verification that its me that is calling?

WTF is that?? those people have free access to my SS #??

^%#$#^%^^%% !!!!

Moneyguy1 07-12-2004 11:12 PM

The cable company is allowed to ask you only the last four digits. That is all they need. Don't give anyone over the phone or over the net the full number.

"There are an estimated nine million illegal aliens living in the U.S."

yeah, the're all living in Miami.

anyway, there's nothing we can do about this S/S fraud, we dont have money/resources, 3 Billion a month is spent in Iraq fighting Dubya's illegal "war on terrorism"

According to a news report I saw last year there are several generic SSNs that can legally be used by an individual. I wish I could find them. The cable company would be a perfect place to use such a number.

If you have health care coverage then take a look at your ID card. Does it have your SSN prominently displayed on the front as your ID number?

Moneyguy1 07-13-2004 11:24 AM

Re: SS number on other cards..Yup.

The SSA tells you for security reasons not to carry your SS card so if your wallet is lost or stolen, your number is safe.

Then the HMOs, some other insurance carriers including Medicare use the SS number on their card and tell you not to leave home without it.

I have queried these organizations about this anomoly and received no rational explanation.

Go figure.

The inmates are now fully in charge of the asylum.

SS# are too easy to "duplicate or forge" a basic Driver License has 100 time smore security features on it.

Why not stick to the same format as Driver's licenses?

SS cards are still printed on plain paper - Not even a damn watermark or a PHOTO attache dto it!

When you think about it though - I think the goverment benefits from fake SS or duplicate accounts - They get double the SS Taxes collected but only 1 person normally claims the refund for just the amount of 1 person (the illigal user normally doesnt file a claim)

vash 07-13-2004 01:18 PM

my SS# was my college id # for 7...errrr....i mean...4.5 years.

Here's the Federal Goverment's ID Theft resource center: http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/

Good link to have handy.

Pretty hard to protect yourself when Social Security numbers are randomly generated on fake ID cards, and yours happens to pop up... Another thing to thank the politicians who support an open borders policy for....

It has nothing to do with open borders at all - They (imigrants) will allways be here as long as their are jobs.

It has more to do with the lack of security on the numbers and the lack of expediting corrections by the beuros.

Or for crying out loud, if people are going to come here anyhow, make them legal. Let them live a legal life. Issue them a REAL SS# and lets Collect taxes from ALL of them.

I sent a question regarding the use of a Generic SSN...I'll post the answer when I get it. Every weapon in the arsenal counts.

You should know this also:

From the SSA site

<b>Question:</b>

<i>Must I provide a Social Security number (SSN) to any business or government agency that asks?</i>

<b>Answer:</b>

<i>The Social Security number (SSN) was originally devised to keep an accurate record of each individual’s earnings, and to subsequently monitor benefits paid under the Social Security program. However, use of the SSN as a general identifier has grown to the point where it is the most commonly used and convenient identifier for all types of record-keeping systems in the United States.

Specific laws require a person to provide his/her SSN for certain purposes. While we cannot give you a comprehensive list of all situations where an SSN might be required or requested, an SSN is required/requested by:

· Internal Revenue Service for tax returns and federal loans
· Employers for wage and tax reporting purposes
· States for the school lunch program
· Banks for monetary transactions
· Veterans Administration as a hospital admission number
· Department of Labor for workers’ compensation
· Department of Education for Student Loans
· States to administer any tax, general public assistance, motor vehicle or drivers license law within its jurisdiction
· States for child support enforcement
· States for commercial driver’s licenses
· States for Food Stamps
· States for Medicaid
· States for Unemployment Compensation
· States for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families
· U.S. Treasury for U.S. Savings Bonds

The Privacy Act regulates the use of SSNs by government agencies. When a Federal, State, or local government agency asks an individual to disclose his or her Social Security number, the Privacy Act requires the agency to inform the person of the following: the statutory or other authority for requesting the information; whether disclosure is mandatory or voluntary; what uses will be made of the information; and the consequences, if any, of failure to provide the information.

If a business or other enterprise asks you for your SSN, you can refuse to give it. However, that may mean doing without the purchase or service for which your number was requested. For example, utility companies and other services ask for a Social Security number, but do not need it; they can do a credit check or identify the person in their records by alternative means. Giving your number is voluntary, even when you are asked for the number directly. If requested, you should ask why your number is needed, how your number will be used, what law requires you to give your number and what the consequences are if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you decide if you want to give your Social Security number. The decision is yours.</i>"

Personal identification security will be another crisis-managment situation we'll be able to look forward to, along with medical information, suburban congestion and jobs creation.

Don't worry though, as soon as all the bar codes on clothing have been replaced by RF transmitters (as Wall Mart is doing now) your identity can be verified by the linked-association of the assemblage of personal items on or about you.
