One of the problems are the credit reporting organizations themselves. The information is too freely disseminated and when a dubious loan is authorized, Experian and the rest shrug and disavow all responsibility.You can, however, notify them in writing that no information is to be given out unless personally authorized by you. That is a legal tactic and I highly recommend it. Make it return receipt requested and keep the signed receipts.

The entire credit reporting industry is poorly regulated and subject to error which, in most cases as applies to the individual "guilty until proven innocent". And as a whole, this practice of private information being shared without your consent predates the "Patriot Act", but was not lost on the writers of that legislation.

How many times do I have to call the freaking cable company or whatever for customer assistance and the guy or girl on the other end asks my social security number for verification that its me that is calling?

The cable company is allowed to ask you only the last four digits. That is all they need. Don't give anyone over the phone or over the net the full number.

According to a news report I saw last year there are several generic SSNs that can legally be used by an individual. I wish I could find them. The cable company would be a perfect place to use such a number.

If you have health care coverage then take a look at your ID card. Does it have your SSN prominently displayed on the front as your ID number?

The SSA tells you for security reasons not to carry your SS card so if your wallet is lost or stolen, your number is safe.

Then the HMOs, some other insurance carriers including Medicare use the SS number on their card and tell you not to leave home without it.

I have queried these organizations about this anomoly and received no rational explanation.

Go figure.

SS# are too easy to "duplicate or forge" a basic Driver License has 100 time smore security features on it.

Why not stick to the same format as Driver's licenses?

SS cards are still printed on plain paper - Not even a damn watermark or a PHOTO attache dto it!

When you think about it though - I think the goverment benefits from fake SS or duplicate accounts - They get double the SS Taxes collected but only 1 person normally claims the refund for just the amount of 1 person (the illigal user normally doesnt file a claim)

Pretty hard to protect yourself when Social Security numbers are randomly generated on fake ID cards, and yours happens to pop up... Another thing to thank the politicians who support an open borders policy for....

It has nothing to do with open borders at all - They (imigrants) will allways be here as long as their are jobs.

It has more to do with the lack of security on the numbers and the lack of expediting corrections by the beuros.


Or for crying out loud, if people are going to come here anyhow, make them legal. Let them live a legal life. Issue them a REAL SS# and lets Collect taxes from ALL of them.
