I am in the market for a 4x12 cab to go with my 100W head and found what appears to be a bargain. It's 1960B manufactured in 1963.

Just curious if anyone here has any idea on what it would be worth given it's vintage. Speakers are reprtedly good (greenbacks) but the tolex is very worn.

Given there are some muso's here I thought it would be worth asking. Even if only to serve as an OT post with no political content.

Here's a pic.

in general I think slants are worth more than straights. I'm not a Marshall expert, but that doesn't look like a '63 vintage...I seem to recall the logo was different (smaller) and the grill cloth different. That one looks more like an '83.

Original speakers can be an odd thing...plus or minus. Plus for the collector and player (if they are good), but cones can dry out, etc so sometimes original speakers sound like crap.

.........you are absolutely correct. I have since learned that "1963" is a serial number. In my travels I seem to have stumbled across the pelican parts of guitar amp forums though:

You are right, that's not a early '60s cabinet. Im getting ready to sell my Marshall stuff off so I'll post some pics later. One of my cabinets is a 1960TV with the salt and pepper cloth, charcoal tolex, and gold small logo and piping. It's a re-issue of the early-mid '60s JTM 45 era stuff with the 25watt greenbacks. It should be a close visual representation of a '63 angled cab. The cabinet is probably 80-90% and I would get more than $400 for it from what I can tell. Ive run a JTM45 and a 1987x with this cab and it just sounds huge.

I have a late '60s 8x10 cabinet that is original I can post pics of when I get back to the house. Its the only 8x10 Ive ever seen in person, but it should give you an idea of some of the grill cloth and tolex they were using then. This cabinet sounds unbelievable. Very crisp and tight sounding compared to the 4x12 with the Celestion greenbacks.

Victor I play a 2210 jcm 800 lead series (100 watts head) thru a slant 1960(1996) , I got this set up back in 1996. I love it, I play it with my 1965 fender mustang , its great for the rock I play. Never played greenbacks, hows the sound on the greenbacks?
What you can do is go to guitar center if you have one, and take your head down there and play through differnet new and used or vintage cabs and see which one you like. Then look for a deal on Ebay or your local papers, I dont reccomend buying from guiatr center as they dont really give you a deal. I should know I worked there (98) for about 1 week and said screw it .

Nice setup fenderguy.

The greenbacks are nice. Warm sounding. They contribute to Angus Young tone with the right amp.

As a bass player I can tell you they are TOO DAMN LOUD! And I use an SVT! Had a hearing test yesterday and 40 years of rockin' have taken their toll. Only 50% left and that's shakey. Doc says it's all from sonic shock...snare drum and lead guitarists! I think I'm going to invest in some of those E.R. plugs. Any of you other players out there use them?

I had a Jubilee 2-12 combo back in the late 80's. OK, but I got rid of it for a MkIII Boogie. Had other Boogies, Fenders, Riveras, etc over the years.

But they all suck compared to the Bogner Shiva I had EL34 version reverb head with Shiva 1-12 ported cabinet. Brilliant piece of gear.

These days I don't even have a guitar amp...just plug direct and use Amplitube plugin for recording. Live its nothing but bass gigs...

FenderGuy, unfortunately I am nowhere near as photogenic as you. So no pics on hand at the moment.

I couldn't afford the beans for a valve head back in the day when I bought the head I have now. It's a Marshall 100W solid state "mid stack". Comes with two cabs that each have a 12" GT75 Celetion.

Mates laugh at it. Mostly because it reminds them of the bit in Spinal Tap when the 6" x 3" stonehenge gets lowered onto the stage and wee elves start dancing around it.

So I figured, a full size cab (if I can get one on the cheap) would even the score on the speaker envy front.

I'll post a pic later tonight.

All it takes is a steady tripod and good eye for detail...

Does anyone know a place to get my head re-tubed in Arizona? ...I've had the same tubes (el 34's) in my amp since 1996 and I need a re-tube.....

Hey FenderGuy

Didnt Marsha used to go with Lemmy or Brian Robertson in Motorhead? I believe he had a hot date with Sasha as well.

Anybody have a Komet? It's based on a Trainwreck circuit from Ken Fischer. I'd sell every amp I've ever had twice for one of these and never look back. Unbelievable. The guys that manufacture these are here in Baton Rouge. I used to hang out in their shop when they were building the prototypes. The workmanship is like nothing I've ever seen in a piece of music equipment. No expense has been spared in any of the components or the details that go into a Komet. The tone is like a real JTM45, but somehow better.

Stuart,

I believe the correct spelling is:

"Motör Head"
