LOS ANGELES (AP) - A spokesman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sunday that the governor would not apologize for calling lawmakers "girlie men," despite criticisms from Democrats that the remark was sexist and homophobic.

Schwarzenegger dished out the insult at a rally Saturday as he claimed Democrats were delaying the budget by catering to special interests.

"If they don't have the guts to come up here in front of you and say, 'I don't want to represent you, I want to represent those special interests, the unions, the trial lawyers ... if they don't have the guts, I call them girlie men," Schwarzenegger said to the cheering crowd at a mall food court in Ontario.

It's hilarious that he's basically doing all the things that enraged the electorate when the previous governor did them, like borrowing money for the current budget. And the press is giving him a pass.

Funny local story: his strongest Republican rival was Richard Riordan, who he bought off with the post of Secretary of Education.

A couple of weeks ago, Riordan was in a classroom taking with kids, and asked a little girl what her name was. "Isis" she replied, adding 'do you know that means Egyptian goddess?' To which Riordan replied, 'no, that means stupid, dirty girl."

This state may be going to Hell in a handbasket, but we're laughing all the way.

This got top of the fold page A1 coverage in our Saturday paper in Sacramento.

The feverish, self-important rantings of the members of the Legislature say it all. Arnold gave a pep-rally and referred to our do-nothing Legislative Dems as girlie men, much to the delight of the crowd.

Now the Dems, led by John Burton, the man who said, on tape "You're a pretty good Bullshi**er" to Arnold directly after his State of the State Address, have one more reason not to do their jobs.

Instead, they have gone on a wild tear, accusing him of homophobic comments and mysogeny. Mark Leno (D) called Arnold's comment "as misogynist as it is anti-gay."

That's right, since the female Legislative members were not included in the "girlie men" comment, this proves Arnold hates women.

I wish these guys (oops, and girls...er, women) would get over themselves and put in a day of work once in a while. They are truly pathetic wastes of space and taxpayer dollars. Did you know it costs $120,000 just to print up the materials and debate one of their lunatic bills every time they want to let a 14 year old vote? This crazyness isn't free.

I hope the Gov. can follow through and knock a few of these pols out of office.

Applies to Republicans, Democrates, and just about every person in public office. The fact that people have a problem with frank talk is exactly why our government is failing us. "Insulting to women and gays", please Get a grip or get out.

Okay so SNL started this in the '80s, everyone and their brother was going around saying "We're here to pump....you up" and "girlie man". It didn't seem to offend anyone that everyone used the words "girlie man/men". So, now the Dem's want to take issue w/ it... , hello anyone out there.

Yes, I do. I can't believe anyone's calling the Gov. on this SNL-parody comment after we've endured years of Burton's swearing like a sailor, not to mention ex-gov. Davis' obscene outbursts. Remember Davis' "they're just a bunch of rich sore losers" comment about the recall when it was just getting started?

I've got absolutely no problem with Arnold kicking the legislators' butts until they at least get a budget signed. We're almost three weeks late, and they are out talking about his supposed homophobia instead of working out a budget deal.

There are no depths to which the Legislature will not sink, due to the safety of their redistricted seats and overwhelming majority. They need to be called on it, and there's only one man in the state who can do it, IMO.

In all fairness, how do you defend yourself from an immature name calling session?

Personally I would walk away but in the political world to not make a statement is to admit guilt. I would have chosen a different way to confront Arnold, for instance - he ran a ticket to get elected based on both sides working together. His immature stand quoted here does not live up to the profession expectations of a man of office I have nor does it live up to the promises he made while running (but who ever really does). I'm not calling this a flip flop in any way I'm just saying that he is not living up to the spirit of why he ran for office by going down this road.

He didn't get my vote to begin with and while I have been satisfied with his efforts to this point I'm disappointed that the budget is where it is and I am disappointed in his comments as I am with Riordans a few weeks ago. Both comments are unprofessional and have no place coming from the mouths of men said to represent this state.

An apology I believe is in order to at least the people he represents.

Not true. That's what they called the remark.

And the notion that it was "the Democrats" is ludicrous. I could care less, and I'm a Democrat. It was a dumb comment, since he has to work with the people he was talking about, who now will have to stand up to him instead of compromise.

The truth is that Arnold is a 'stealth Democrat' who ran on a Republican ticket with a lot of Republican and Democrat support. But don't tell anyone.

Calling people names is only going to put them on the defensive looking for the fastest way to get on the offensive.

This isn't the school yard it's real life and the only way that the budget is going to pass is via compromise. Compromise is something that boths sides have historic problems with - nobody wants it and the word is rarely used to describe political actions.

Compromise is a good thing, it helps us all get along...why can't we all just get along.

I'll let you have your gas guzzling SUVs and Porsches but you have to give up tires.

With all due respect, if you voted to keep Davis, you can't claim that you have a problem with unprofessional behavior. The man was renowned for his filthy language and name calling.

I did vote against the recall which in and of itself is a vote for Davis. I felt the same way about his comments that I do about Arnold's. In that isntance I was voting against the process and not for the man (since I have to defend my vote).

This is not a judgement against Republicans or Democrats, I am simply stating that his choice of words was unprofessional. Though his reaction to his situation may be justified the method with which he has choosen to deal with it is that of a 6th grader at best (more name calling).

I dont' think people from out of state understood that the recall effort against Davis started less than 2 months after he was elected. I agreed with you to the extent that I 'voted against the process' although there's virtually no difference in social or fiscal policy between Davis & Schwarzenegger, so it wasn't a big deal election to me.

In terms of their personal issues, Davis' temper tantrums and Arnold's serial groping seem to me equally disgusting.

You all can argue all you want about how messed up the system is, which, go figure, is what Arnald's statement was all about...

He called them "girlie men". Lets think about some synonums for what people say all the time: cowards, liars, pork barrel *****s, etc.

Hey, it got your attention didn't it? That was his goal. He probably wanted to say it in a much harsher way, lord knows we all have a nice vocabulary full of things to say to polititians.

But what am i saying, everyone has the right thing to say at the right moment. All of us would do wonders in the same position as our leaders. I know i couldn't be a leader like that. I would be too harsh, for the same reason i will never sit on a jury... i am not a lemming.
