Red face Transmission Problems and Costs?

I've got a '91 300ZX automatic that trans has given up. It is stuck in third gear, will not engage anything but P and third, and will not roll in reverse.

After talking to recomended trans shop (I am begining to wonder why) it will cost me $375 to remove it and $375 just to put it back in. Does that sound right?

He also said depending on what needs replaced parts wise it may be cheaper for him to get a fully rebuilt trans for about $1100 and swap them.

Anyone have experience with AAATCO? http://www.aaatcotransmissions.com

Automatic transmissions are hydrolic magic.

A manual I would do myself but an auto I'm not so sure about. If it is a highly electrical system then I would steer it to someone responsible and pay them.

Go to Harbor Trans on Harbor Blvd next to Ready Rentals have them qoute you. I used to have them do R&R for $100 over the rebuild cost.

Most modern transmissions have more parts than the engine. Old trannys....my father-in-law rebuilt a GM TH350 trans with a set of box wrenches and a large "clamp type" pair of vice grips. He never did this before, but was successful the first time. Oh yeah...he also had "How to rebuild your transmission". And, English is his second language.

I'd go with a rebuilt from a reputable source, and give your's as a core. Unless you are extrememly comfortable with the guy rebuilding it.
