the price of moving
so plenty of talk about housing prices tanking, selling to get out with maximum profit, etc. But that means you have to move (and if you're playing the market, it is a move that is "optional"). So what do you consider the "price" of moving? For me, it not only is what I've got to pay a moving company, but also the "pain and suffering" of the process. And I think that number varies based on how much you like your current house/situation.
My ballpark figure is $100K. |

there is no set price. it depends on each person. A single guy doesn't pay as much as a couple with 3 kids needing good schools.
The only way to avoid this issue altogether is never move (bad for consumer economy), or live in a trailer in Vegas, utilizing premium buffets to make up for the lack of a kitchen. ![]() |

Closing costs, fix it, home warranty and Termite inspections 4K, 5K. Pain and Suffering oh Pleeze that sounds awfull Lib to me....Mommy I fell down and have BOO BOOOUUU... Remodeling of the new place....sorry that comes under the heading of Expenses on the new place and can be written off as improvemnets so that don't count either...

It cost MS about $40K to move us and 2 cars from Dallas toSeattle last year. We are probably moving back to TX (Austin) in the next year. I'm planning to pack everything, get the movers to load and unload. With 2 cars trucked and driving one, I estimate about $20K.

Herr Buffeter, some people don't mind moving, and as such, have a lower "cost". Some of us HATE to move, and doing so is a burden. For me, it is a six figure burden (ie, there would have to be at least that much money/perks involved to make it worth my while, or have some other external pressure forcing the move). For others, less so.

Since we're talking economics, dont' forget opportunity costs. i.e. time spent doing move/RE/driving/R&R related crap vs. time spent on the job.

We almost moved into a bigger house - at a cost of $50K more than our current house. I still have this list I made of the things we would buy. This was a brand new house - a resale might not need all of this:
Garage door openers Window treatments Water softener Landscaping (lot was bare desert) Furniture (going from 2000sq ft to 3000 sq ft) Misc decorations, art, etc Speakers/wiring Pool Ceiling fans Our conservative estimate was another $50K on top of the $50K the bigger house would cost us. We decided not to move after that analysis.

tabs,, you did not mention all your emotional baggage and how that would get packed away for a move.... changing shrinks, find a new rub&tug massage parlor, an out of the way place to put the jack stands your 911 sit on, and lastly airfare for your ego....

i hate moving. it would take a really nice job, that paid well AND was stressfree. plus, either my girlfriend would have to move with me, and she would need the nice job thing too. OR the town could be full of lonely 20something girls that has never seen a chinese guy before and just wants to treat me like piece of meat. in that case, what girlfriend?
i cannot put a price on my pain and suffering. i think 200k would get me to buy some boxes. put it this way, if i won the lotto, i wouldnt move. i would quit my job tho.

What me have an ego???? NO....LOL....What do you think that 16 tons was all about....
Geezus Lee you could get all those things for 50K? Man I want to know where you shop, you got me beat by a mile....Oh unless the pool is one of those blue plastic kind you buy at Walmart I think the pool alone would cost you most of that 50K. Nostatus Pleeze....if you don't want to move why even bring it up...there is a want someplace in there. Those costs I'd like to see you collect on... the last 2 houses I owned before my Trailer here in LV I lived in for a combined 22 years...That kinda indicates that I'm not a mover arounder either...

The pool business is extremely competitive here in Phoenix. A basic "play pool" costs around $12-15K here:
