Nerd alert: Star Trek/Science Fiction Thread

Okay, I'll admit up front that I like Star Trek. I've never been to a convention or anything, but I've seen just about all the Next Generation episodes. I was in college when Next Generation started, and a crowd used to gather in the one dorm room that had a TV and watch it. So maybe the good memories of college life have something to do with enjoying the show.

We recently got a Tivo, and it's picked up a bunch of "original" Star Trek episodes. I'd never seen any of these before - they were on before I was born.

You know, if they were remade with modern sets and effects, I think they would still stand up today. I just saw a couple called "I, Mudd" and "Manchurian" something-or-other, and they were really pretty good, if you get over the corny overacting.

I wonder why these old episodes aren't remade instead of continuing with the feeble "Enterprise" stuff. Most of the viewers of Star Trek today probably don't even remember the original show.

Of course, none of these hold a candle to the all-time best science fiction series ever: Babylon 5. I also loved Firefly for the brief time it was on.

Just rambling...slow day at the office....

I kinda like the new "Enterprise"...at least they shoot back rather than trying to hail the enemy with diplomatic messages like they did on TNG.

The all time best stuff was when William Shatner launched into his singing career...

I liked some of the original series but never got THAT into it. Actually my favorite is the two part pilot.

My favorite of favorite Science Fiction movies is "Forbidden Planet". Still love Robby the Robot.

BTW, Is "Lost in Space" on anywhere in the Cable/Satellite world?

You Know You Watch Too Much Star Trektm If...

Your second language is spoken only in the Gamma Quadrant

You've ever said "He's dead, Jim." in your best DeForest Kelley voice.

You try to find an episode where Kirk says "Beam me up, Scotty."

You cried when the Enterprise was destroyed in Star Trek III

You have an entire Web Page devoted to William Shatner!

You've ever gone up to someone wearing a red polyester shirt and offered your condolences.

You refer to your television remote control as your "phaser" and proceed to disintegrate any program that you don't like.

You frequent the Klingontm Only IRC channel.

Your idea of Current Events is finding out how relations between the Klingons and the Federation are near the Cardassian border.

You don't realize that Deanna's empathic powers really aren't that impressive. "Captain, I sense hostility." "Thank you, Counselor. Has the other ship stopped firing on us, Ensign?"

While driving down the highway, you've ever shouted "I'm givin' ‘er all she's got, Capten!"

You're able to suggest other ways to tell if you've watched Too Much Star Trek!

I was always more into Star Wars than Star Trek. I just bought a copy of the '97 re-release of the original Star Wars soundtrack - it had lots of music not included on the original LP.

I also still have my original Star Wars figures. Even at age thirteen I knew they would be valuable some day, but couldn't convice my parents to let me buy a truckload of them. My thirteeness got the best of me and I "carefully" cut open the bubble so I could hold the figures... that was a several hundred dollar mistake!

Lee, I have two of the free "Behind the Scenes" (or was it the "making of..") magazines that were handed out at the theater when the first Star Wars came out. wonder what they're worth.

ST:TOS -- v. cool
ST:TNG -- almost as cool
ST:DS9 -- to boldly sit around and do nothing, where no-one has boldly sat around before
ST:Voyager -- Man, this sucks...we better get some t!tty on this show....hey, it worked! OK, let's hit the reset button.
ST:Enterprise -- Let's see if we can re-hash every old plot from TOS, throw in some sex and bad acting, and see what happens

LOL Blue, that about sums it up. Then there's:

Babylon 5 -- Wow, you have to watch this in sequence and pay attention? But the 5-year arc pays off and you really start believing the whole thing could be real.

Firefly -- Why hasn't anyone done an unapologetic Western in space before, and how come these people seem so much more human then the Star Trek people?

I agree with Babylon 5. Too bad Turner pulled the plug on "Crusade". I showed real promise.

But, I also like "Stargate SG1". Interesting characters. Now that O'Neil is a Brig.Gen, and there is technically an "opening", why not bring back Jonas Quinn and have Gen Hammel show up once in awhile?

I am addicted to Star Trek also but mostly TNG. I never watched the original series. I have seen every TNG episode though. I rented them from Netflix for 3 months and watched every episode from start to finish.

Speaking of Sci-Fi, did anybody every watch the series Time Trax? It didn't last long but in my opinion it was a good series.

Man, don't get me started on Star Trek. I was pissed when they ended TNG. I went to a convention in Sacramento a decade ago because Shatner and Nimoy were there. DS9, Voyager and Enterprise can't hold a candle to the original and TNG but I still watch them because I'm a true trekkie geek. Oh yeah, it'll be easy to recognize me at the German Autofest. I'll be the one with the ears on....live long and prosper.

I'm not sure what mag you're talking about. Was it any of these?

Some of the collectables seem to have gone DOWN in value after ebay became more of a household name. I remember seeing Star Wars promo glasses from Burger King selling for $200 a set when I first discovered ebay. Now they go for $25-30 a set. Wish I'd dumped mine then.
