Getting tired of beer, direct me

Don't get me wrong, I love beer:) It's just this little pub I go to only has domestic junk. I am a little weird in that I prefer draft beer over bottled, with cans of any flavor coming in a distant last. Getting off subject here, anyway, what is a good casual drink as a replacement? Normally I will go to a greyhound, and in the past was a fan of Yukon straight. But those days are behind me. The greyhounds are great, but now that I'm an old ass they give me heartburn in volume. What's a drunk to do? I can't quit, I've never been a quitter and I have no respect for them. Whiskey tends to be too sweet, and I've never enjoyed anything with water. I think I'm screwed, Miller draft it is:( Unless you guys have an idea that is, time is of the essence, I leave work in 100 minutes. Hurry!

84porsche 08-05-2004 11:24 AM

How drunk do you want to get? Something relatively mild would be a Mike's Hard Lemonade or a Smirnoff Ice (Triple Black or Regular).

lendaddy 08-05-2004 11:35 AM

No no, I don't get plowed, I just like to keep socially fuzzy if you will. I cannot recall the last time I got hammered, not worth it! The citrus stuff tastes good, and I'll occassionally have a couple of the wifes. In fact I have always loved tart, citrussy(is that a word?) things, and I think that's why my heartburn is so bad. I never got heartburn till I was 28, then DAnmmmmmmmm all of a sudden I have it almost daily. So anyway I tend to avoid the acids.

vash 08-05-2004 11:35 AM

vodka, on the rocks.

i am diggin freezing cold vodka. it is amazing the differences between brands.

lendaddy 08-05-2004 11:38 AM

Good idea Vash, but this is a pub/speakeasy. I doubt they are gonna have a method for chilling the vodka very well.

Do they make Kerry Kooler? W's Hard Lemonade?

vash 08-05-2004 11:43 AM

ok, vodka martini, on the rocks.

lendaddy 08-05-2004 11:43 AM

You're not helping Nostatic, we're down to 80 minutes! Time is of the essence, perhaps you don't understand the gravity of the situation?

adamred 08-05-2004 11:46 AM

Vodka Gimlet (only if they use fresh lime juice, no Rose's) on the rocks...I love Vodka drinks but hate martini glasses, always seems to get warm before I'm done and spill too much in a crowded bar...

Alternative is a dirty martini on the rocks, but not too dirty or you're looking for a glass of water for 3 days....

Ketel One on the rocks is an excellent candidate.

Just over a year ago I switched from beer to red wine beacuse the beer was hurtin my stomach somethin awful. Never had a problem since.

I do still indulge but in the brew, but "occasionally".

lendaddy 08-05-2004 11:50 AM

What exactly is a vodka gimlet? Is it just Vodka/lime juice? Sounds tempting, since the amount of lime juice I am sure is minimal.

adamred 08-05-2004 11:52 AM

Vodka/Lime juice, you got it, some use a sugared lime juice, some add some sugar to the mix, I prefer fresh lime juice, and ketel one, nicely shakken, on the rocks!

nostatic 08-05-2004 12:00 PM

tanquerey and tonic

cadillac margarita, rocks

vash 08-05-2004 12:03 PM

i gotta second the tanq&tonic. nice and refreshing. get it in a tall glass, and you are golden.

wine seems like a good idea too. but i tend to need food, and that would be another thread.

lendaddy 08-05-2004 12:06 PM

Thanks guys, I'll give em a try. Vash, I love wine myself, big fan of very dry whites.

goat 08-05-2004 12:10 PM

Whiskey tends to be too sweet
I would have to disagree with this statement.
You should try a good single malt from Islay, like Laphroaig.

vash 08-05-2004 12:10 PM

lendaddy, if you try all the suggestions, you will be wasted. and that would be quite the happyhour.

lendaddy 08-05-2004 12:14 PM

I am 6'2" and 270lbs, so it takes a bit to put me down:) but yea I get your point.

"You should try a good single malt from Islay, like Laphroaig."
Me....
"Hey Merle, three fingers of Laphroaig."
Barkeep....
"What did you say about my wife?"

Like I said, little pub:)

I will give it a try next time i'm in the city though.

84porsche 08-05-2004 12:20 PM

If you are going for all the alcohol, make sure you throw in a nice tri-tip steak to help.

}{arlequin 08-05-2004 01:02 PM

If you get a nicely proportioned Sapphire-'n-Tonic (w/ lime) I swear it begins to taste like Sprite.... (the good version of sprite, where it's not sweet AND it has a kick)

Stoli Oranj(sic) on the rocks?

turbocarrera 08-05-2004 01:11 PM

Black Russians(vodka and kahlua) are great to sip on while you drink beer.. in fact i almost always order BR's with beer on a 1:1 ratio..

UconnTim97 08-05-2004 01:50 PM

I like Saphire or Tanquerey 10 and Tonic with a lime...quite refreshing.

Burnin' oil 08-05-2004 02:21 PM

Tablespoon of smack

dd74 08-05-2004 02:43 PM

Kettleone martini. Up with olives. Makes the world a brighter place. :)

lendaddy 08-06-2004 05:04 AM

Ok, the results are in. Well sorta. I walked in and the barkeep promptly slip a beer in front of me. I didn't want to be rude since he was just trying to be efficient , so I drank it. Before I could order he did it again! I drank this one as well. At this point I started to wonder if this is what normally goes on and I don't notice:) Anyway I was able to try the vodka gimlet on the third try. Excellent! But damn, that's a sipper my friend. It was made with goose and very little lime juice. Problem is, I could actually feel the effects of that sucker as opposed to the slow and cumulative effects of beer. After that they snuck me one more beer and I went to coffee for the next couple hours. Going to the gimlet will require an all together new pace to my program, but I think I'm up to the challenge!

}{arlequin 08-06-2004 06:03 AM

Sounds like a healthy pour since it seems even the ice didn't bring down the voltage.

Speaking of healthy pours... anyone from S. Carolina? I went to Columbia and realized not a single bar (I guess it's a law, but why?) has ANY bottles of alcohol on the shelves. All they have is rows and rows of the little airplane bottles of every kind of booze that the particular bar carries. Guess you can never get less, but you can't get more, either. And it just looks plain funny on the shelves. Felt like I was on the "It's a small world" ride.

RickM 08-06-2004 06:07 AM

Some throw a glass of water in for every other round. (Not too manly, ehh)

lendaddy 08-06-2004 06:18 AM

It was a triple shot, but tasted great. I was impressed. When I ordered it the bartender said "oh going hardcore?" if that tells ya anything. Water might not be a bad idea, lest they find me in the dumpster the next morning:)

adamred 08-06-2004 07:18 AM

I had a black tie event with my client last year, and lost track of the number of gimlets at around 7 (my client has a hollow leg), needless to say much violent GI reaction ensued the next morning.

I still love them but you best be careful especially when changing over from beer...

dd74 08-06-2004 09:46 AM

Back when I had an Irish liver, I used to drink tarmacs. You guys know what those are, right?

Mark Wilson 08-06-2004 10:26 AM

Jack and coke. I miss it so.

adamred 08-06-2004 10:43 AM

dd, enlighten me, sounds interesting....

Have yet to try it. I was told its some good stuff.

azasadny 08-06-2004 11:07 AM

I usually drink Red Breast Irish Single Malt Pot Still Irish Whiskey or Rebel Yell Bourbon, depending on my mood.

Thats a great gift. If you like bourbon, make sure its available locally before you sample it. It will spoil you. You will want more of it when you run out. Every bourbon you taste after that will seem rotten. This stuff has won the 'Bourbon of the Year' award 3 years in a row. No other label has ever won the award consecutively. Very, very good bourbon.

A black and tan - (Bass & Guinness) with a shot of Jameson's Irish whiskey poured in. :)

deanp 08-06-2004 11:25 AM

dd74 - that sounds really good. I prefer Bushmill's Black Bush to Jameson, but will have to give that a try....

adamred 08-06-2004 11:57 AM

Considering those are my absolute most favorite alcoholic beverages, I must try one, thanks!

I am pretty sure that is what is reffered to as a "Irish Car Bomb" in my neck of the woods. Never heard it called a Tarmac before.
