Win a Porsche - Do those ads ever tempt you?
My daughter's school is considering running a raffle for a luxury car. You know... the tickets usually cost $100 and there are, "Only 2000 tickets available!"
Has anyone every participated in one of these? Seems like a lot of tickets to sell at those prices, but they seem to be very popular. Thougts?

Lee, I personally think its a great idea. No experience, though. Is it a private school? Public school... might be some problems. I'm sure there are escrow companies out there who can handle the transaction and make it seem more legit. Seems like a great way to raise money for a school to me.

My friend won a truck through a similar type of auction/raffle when we were in college.

a member at the country club i worked at won a back-of-ROAD&TRACK auction. $100 per ticket. Only 2000 tickets.
$100 later, and he had a 968 coupe.

Malibu Kiwanis has an annual raffle on Labor day, coinciding with the Chili Cookoff.
This year's grand prize is a new black Boxster. I have my $100 ticket. I actually bought a couple of tickets in '94 when the prize was an RS America.

I always wondered if this was a viable way to "sell" a car.
Some to charity and a predetermined, reasonable amount to the owner.

I always buy a couple of $100. tickets when going thru Dubai, UAE.
This is a famous raffle, specified number of tickets, car is delivered anywhere in the world, taxes paid. I have won twice in 10 years, both cars going to needy employees, as a way of saying thank you for helping me start my business. One of them took his Jag XK8 delivered to Minneapolis. The other took her AMG 55 to Wyoming. Many years later they both still have them. I still buy a couple of $100 tickets to the MBCA (Mercedes Club) raffle every year. Have not won that one, but if I do, that one is for me.

Geez, I get away from the site for a few days, and I am getting offers....
These two people have worked for me for 15 years (that alone is worth a car), and have stuck thru thick and thin. In the meantime, if something comes up, you guys will be the first to get a crack at it!

All taxes were included in the raffle award. It is one of the reasons these Dubai raffles are so popular. If you have ever walked thru the Dubai terminal, there are 20 or more cars on display, all high end versions, with a machine for buying the tickets. You win, you really do win, no strings (or taxes). As I remember, typically there are 500 or so tickets sold on each car. You can only buy 10 tickets on each car. The ticket is for that version of that car, delivered anywhere in the world. You get to pick the color, everything else is already done. Every available option. One of the most popular ones is the bullet-proof Rolls. The UAE looks at it as advertising. It works, anytime I have to fly thru the Middle East, I change planes in Dubai just to buy a few tickets.
I handed them the winning ticket. I know this sounds magnanimous. It wasn't. I had a nice car, these people didn't. They had worked long hours, in a management position without much in the way of a pay increase, months at a time, on a new airline, without any ownership stake, and were instrumental in making it all happen. Anybody who has ever started their own business understands the constant juggling of capital and resources. Our paychecks were minimal and the four managers were always the last to be paid. Even then, there were times when I would say "Don't run to the bank until next tuesday". We were in Las Vegas, and there are some funny stories about cashing our friday checks in a casino across town on a sunday night knowing it wouldn't be good until tuesday because the casino gave you chips equal to 3% of your paycheck, which we would use in the $1.99 buffet for 3 days of meals. Only once in 2 years did we get a visit from the "Guido and Vito" collection agency. This casino, when they found out what we were doing with our airline, became one of our best clients. I could write a book on some of those charters. ("Take these guys and their golf bags to Palm Springs. Bring the keno girls back." It was amazing how many people casinos either want to get out of town, or get into town.) On a subsequent venture, I did make them stockholders in addition to the normal pay.
