Oh, well that would be romantic in a James Bond sort of way, but hardly the case. He was booed and protested against in the streets by thousands. Even the IOC wanted him as far away from the games as possible.

The world at large likes Americans. They simply dislike Bush et al.

It's a shame. I actually had a lot of respect for Powell at one point but he's permantantly destroyed his own credibility by associating himself with this administration and its lies and general idiocy. He really did have the potential to be the nation's first minority president, but I think the chances of that ever happening now are even less than that of BushCo getting "re"-elected.

Conspiracy theory: The Republican party, afraid of backing a minority candidate, wants to make DAMN sure that the Dick (as in Cheney, not my wang, not that there's much difference) gets the nomination in 2008. As such, they need to destroy C.P.'s credibility and effectively knock him out of the running. How better to do that than force him into a lose-lose proposition of being the guy to INSIST that Hussein has WMDs when it's known there are none? Win-win for BushCo - the "justification" for war is out there with C.P.'s credibility behind it AND the Republican party doesn't have to alienate its hardcore closet-rascist right wing base (and votes) in 2008. Horrible to think, but you know. . . it does kinda make sense. . .

So what will that make Powell in 2008? A democratic candidate? An independent? He has much more credibility than Cheney - not just with Americans, but on the world stage. I think alienating Powell would be quite a large mistake. He's visible and can be vocal; plus he isn't afflicted with nearly as much controversy as Cheney, i.e. Halliburton, main architect of Iraq, etc.

Can't you just feel the global love for the US government?

Hopefully our citizens will still be welcome in most places in the world despite the fact that our ruling regime can't travel about without needing thousands of troops, police and fortresses to protect them.

Powell will unfortunately never run for President. His wife has some mental health issues and he agreed with her not to run for office... or so the story goes.

Hell, if bush can somehow keep mccain in line behind him I imagine they certainly have numerous ways to keep powell in check too.

For one, if they wanted to dredge up old vietnam issues to use against him, one of powell's first big tasks as a military commander was being a part of the operation to keep the mai-lai massacre and other vietnamese attrocities under wraps. Perhaps its the case that Powell has always had a penchant for being the government's lying mouthpiece since it has assisted his rising through the ranks.

In fact, for those that are curious how powell got to the position that he is today you might want to check out the following reading. Knowing his background greatly reduces my ability to have any respect for the man IMHO.

I think it is just the liberal fantasy that Powell does not support the administration. Every time he is asked, he stands up firmly behind the President. Oh, the horror! A well respected, well educated, well regarded, black man is a conservative!
