Did you see it? He stepped right out and held back the runner who eventually won the bronze medal. A protest has been filed, of course.

The strangest part is this same guy tried to disrupt the Silverstone F1 race by running out on the track during the race.

Does he necessarily have any politics? He wasn't carrying any banner at the marathon - maybe he's just addled. Regardless, I hope he gets locked up for a good while.

Marathon Protester Is Irish Ex-Priest

The intruder who attacked the front runner in the men’s Olympic Marathon was named by police tonight as Irishman Cornelius Horan.

Horan, a 47-year old former Catholic priest, also disrupted the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last year.

Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima had a 40 second lead in the latter stages of the 26 mile race when Horan struck, dressed in a kilt and wearing a beret with writing scrawled on his back.

Horan ran across the road and manhandled the athlete into the crowd. He was then attacked himself by other spectators.

Police riders were on the course but were not near enough to prevent the attack.

A spokeswoman for the Greek police said Horan had been detained following the marathon incident.

Horan flew into Greece earlier today on a British Airways flight landing at 4.40am.

She said: “Police were aware Horan had done the same thing at Silverstone.

“We asked him why he did this,” she said.

“He said he is preparing for the Second Coming and other such things like that.”

Police gave no further details.

De Lima was visibly distressed by the incident, lost his rhythm and was quickly caught by Italy’s Stefano Baldini and Mebrahtom Keflezighi of the US, who went on to win the gold and silver respectively.

De Lima smiled and acknowledged the cheers of the crowd as he finished in the bronze medal position.

The man who disrupted the Olympic marathon, defrocked Irish priest Cornelius Horan, has a history of using unconventional tactics to get his message across.

Horan was arrested after dashing on to the marathon course in Athens and tackling leading runner Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima.

De Lima recovered but was soon overtaken and blamed losing the lead to Italy's Stefano Baldini on the intruder.

Mebrahtom Keflezighi of the United States took the silver medal and Lima hung on for the bronze.

Horan ran on to the marathon course wearing a kilt and beret and a white shirt on which was pinned the message: "The Grand Prix Priest. Israel Fulfillment of Prophecy Says The Bible. The Second Coming is Near." He had a Star of David attached to his kilt.

"The man says he is Irish, he is also drunk. He had been to a taverna earlier," a police source told Reuters.

But the former Catholic priest has done something similar before.

Last year he interrupted the British Formula One Grand Prix last year by running on to the Silverstone track as cars approached at speeds in excess of 240kph.

He was sentenced to two months imprisonment for aggravated trespass.

Greek police said Horan flew into Athens on a British Airways flight.

A spokeswoman for the Greek police said:"Police were aware Horan had done the same thing at Silverstone.

"We asked him why he did this," she said.

"He said he is preparing for the second coming and other such things like that."

Horan apparently sees himself as an agent of peace in a troubled world that is heading towards Armageddon.

According to previous reports, Horan once said: "Remember it took only 20 minutes to destroy the Twin Towers on September 11. The end is closer than we think."

No, he wasn't carrying a banner, he was wearing a banner that had some religious suggestion or the other - I never caught exactly what it said, to be honest.

I wonder if the Italian would have still won if the priest hadn't interfered.

My favorite political/religious protestor was that dude with the rainbow-colored afro. He used to be at Cowboys games, holding up religious signs - "Jesus Saves" or something every time a field goal was kicked.

Didn't that guy go down on a stat rape charge some years ago?

Baldini, the Italian, was looking so very strong. He not only passed Lima, the Brazilian, like he was standing still, he also left the American (ironically, the only one whose name I cannot spell) in his dust. And the American hadn't been attacked by a wacko ex-priest. So I don't think the attack changed the race outcome. Of course you can never be sure.

I wonder what punishment the guy will get? Gotta think the Greeks are angry that he marred their games on the very last day. And clearly a two-month sentence doesn't do it.

That was the "John 3:16" guy. I think his name was "Rockin Rollin" They made a documentary about him...he used to be given tickets by people who had extra tix. I think his life ended up being a tradgedy....
