NASCAR help needed.......

OK, guys, I'm going DEEP into Republican territory this weekend. :D

I will be out in Fontana @ California Speedway for the big NASCAR Labor Day race, in the pits w/ passes, etc. My friends are filming a movie there this weekend and it should be a lot of fun. I anticipate meeting most of the drivers, problem is that I don't follow stock car racing at all, (remember, I'm a Porsche owning Democrat), ;) , I'm hoping that one of you rednecks can give me some pointers so that I can have a halfway intelligent conversation out there.

Thanks in advance! SmileWavy

speeder 09-03-2004 12:09 AM

Let me rephrase that; can one of you Republicans or Southerners help me out here? Come on, you know I love you all. (Y'all). :)

cegerer 09-03-2004 05:03 AM

<i>"Porsche owning Democrat"</i>

That sounds like such a contradiction to me ..... wouldn't you and the planet be happier if you were driving a Toyota Prius? ;)

As for NASCAR: I'm pretty sure they run counterclockwise so if ya'll plan to run out on the track to protest something make sure to look right first ........ :D

jm951 09-03-2004 06:20 AM

I'm a Porsche owning Republican who grew up virtually next door to the home of the World 600 and I still don't like Nastycar. The only advice I can give you is to look out if they try to turn right.

Why don't you just go up to the biggest one you can find in the pit area and tell him he's a Nascar redneck. Your intelligent conversation will begin right there!

BTW, if your going down to the pits, wear long pants or they won't let you in. You know, gas and all.

Have a good race!

"loose" means oversteer
"tight" means understeer

Research a little about "aero push" and restrictor plate racing/engines.

If you see DW (Daryl Waltrip) shake his hand and yell "Boogity, boogity, boogity!" with your best southern accent.

jm951 09-03-2004 07:51 AM

Be sure to put a "3" in your rear window with angel wings on it. Hope you like fired chicken and Budwieser.

speeder 09-03-2004 08:00 AM

Thanks! Just for those that don't know me too well, I'm just kidding about the "redneck" stuff. I would never disrespect anyone whether they were 1/2 my size or double. I'm looking forward to this, it should be a blast!

Pictures to follow.

84porsche 09-03-2004 08:15 AM

I am a Nascar fan but only because I appreciate racing and I only have a red neck when I am sunburned.

Nascar Driver Basics:

Jeff Gordon - Dupont Chevrolet
Jimmie Johnson - Lowes Chevrolet - Teammate of Jeff Gordon

Dale Earnhardt Jr. - Budweiser - He won last week just so you know.
Michael Waltrip - Teammate of Dale Jr.

Tony Stewart - Home Depot - Agressive Driver - has no problem hitting people or getting even.

speeder 09-03-2004 08:23 AM

Wow, so everyone is the son of some former NASCAR legend, huh? (Waltrip, Earnhart, Johnson, etc..).

KevinP73 09-03-2004 08:35 AM

Be sure to ask Jeff if Britney swallows!!

bryanthompson 09-03-2004 08:52 AM

I like all racing, even that crazy school-bus figure eight stuff... that's just hilarious. Anyway... if you get a chance, get a pic with Dale Jarrett (#88 UPS)!

DonDavis 09-03-2004 09:02 AM

Denis,

Michael Waltrip is Darrell's brother.

Honestly, you're going to have a blast! You will probably run into some crew members or drivers that own a Porsche or 2. Get a very close look at the cars. And have someone go over the technicals at the same time. Oh, and don't mention "cheating". It's only cheating if you get caught. If they bring it up, pry a little to see what kinds of things they do.

And if you get to meet Darrell Waltrip, he really is a great guy. You will be hard pressed to find another "celebrity" that's as down to earth or normal as he. Tell him you got a buddy from Bristol. I used to work at the track. His wife would write a payer on a slip of paper for Dale Earnhardt Sr for each race and the Waltrips always parked their RV next to the Earnhardts.

One last thing. I like you and your opinions (wrong as they are :p ) but try to leave the politics in your car. Just enjoy yourself. I think you will be surprised at just how large an event it is. You are very lucky and fans across the country would JUMP at the opportunity that you are going enjoy. Myself included.

Report back with pics and stories of Moonshine. Yes, I said Moonshine. If you are offered, take a small sip. There's some VERY good stuff out these days. Berry, Peach, Grape etc...

Just introduce yourself as "Bubba", and you're IN :) ! Seriously, I realize Nascar isn't for a lot of folks, but I bet you're going to have a blast this weekend... I took my girlfriend to the Richmond race a couple of years ago (she had no interest whatsoever beforehand), and she was hooked! Have fun, and everyone have a happy and safe weekend!!!

mikester 09-03-2004 10:35 AM

I dare you to wear a John Kerry shirt.

=-)

DonDavis 09-03-2004 10:47 AM

I recently met a woman in her mid-late 20's, attractive, vegan and lives in the SF Bay area that is a total NASCAR nut. Knew the driver names, race locations, etc.

All types from all corners. As contrast, I'm sure someone will re-post that pic of the living tribute to "3".

Jason Porter 09-03-2004 10:56 AM

Just so you know, Dale Earnhardt was probably one of the greatest drivers that ever lived. Me and my dad watched a race once when he drove through the grass at around 175 to pass someone for the when. Now, 2 questions could be asked here,

1. Why?

BECAUSE HE WAS THE MAN!!!!!!!!

2. How the hell'd he do that through a turn at those speeds on slicks?

BECAUSE HE WAS THE MAN!!!!!!!!

Have a great time, and check out the cars as much as possible. The American redneck "engineers" working on these things know there ***** like few others, and you'll be surprised at how diverse the intelligence range is while you're there.

BTW - I am a true blue trailer park redneck from a small tobacco town in North Carolina, and am still grieving the loss of Dale. You will never be forgotten my friend...

jm951 09-03-2004 11:03 AM

What town in NC Jason? I grew up near the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

DonDavis 09-03-2004 11:11 AM

I think we have many 'closet' NASCAR fans here.

Superman 09-03-2004 11:18 AM

Intelligent conversation? Or do you want to fit in? It's one or the other, dude.

I'd love to attend a big NASCAR event. Primarily for the sound. Twenty 700-hp unmuffled V8 engines coming down the straight nose-to-tail must make an interesting noise.

Jason Porter 09-03-2004 11:18 AM

I'm from Stoneville, but I did most of my growin' up in Asheboro/Randolph County.

I can't believe you missed that. NASCAR fans believe in dynasties. Look at how they vote!

That's why I don't talk at the races :)! You nailed it though Supe...most newbies are hooked once they HEAR what it's all about...my girlfriend had goosebumps on her arms from the noise!

ps: Jason, I can relate...I haven't been into it nearly as much the past few years...

Excuse me, but I voted for Clinton in 96, and Gore in 00. I don't know who I'm voting for this year, because both candidates seem so terrible and vile it doesn't seem right to do that to America.

Maybe after the election, we can pull a Cali, and have a recall with a new guy who doesn't suck.

BTW - PLEASE DON'T TURN THIS INTO A POLITICAL THREAD!!!

She probably had goosebumps on her eardruums too! They are impressive podunk technology for certain.

Without Dale, it just doesn't feel like Winston Cup any more. Oh wait it's not...done

jm951 09-03-2004 11:31 AM

Jason- I know exactly where Stoneville is, heck I was in Mayodan last weekend.

"Loose" is when the rear end hits the wall; "tight" is when the front end hits the wall.

The only V8 piston generated sound louder than the first lap of a NASCAR event is standing on the starting line with John Force and Cruz Pedragon staged and ready to launch! It will rattle you to the core.

Rumor was she was the cause of his divorce. Just a rumor

speeder 09-03-2004 12:30 PM

Re: Britney, I could ask her myself. Don't really care about that one. As for the Kerry shirt? That's funny. :D

Actually, my Volvo wagon has a big Kerry sticker on the back, but it will be parked w/ all of the Hollywood liberal elites, so I think that it will be safe. ;) Interesting mix of people out there this weekend w/ the film crew and NASCAR all in one place.

Wound up not going today after all, (Hassle w/ obtaining passes), but I hope to still be there for the race on Sunday.

84porsche 09-04-2004 12:40 AM

Denis,

Have fun at the race and watch out for West Nile and all the mosquitios. One of the guys I work with is moving to North Carolina so they gave him a bottle of Off and a Dvd of the Dukes of Hazzard so he can become familiar with the south. Just cheer for Jeff Gordon and you will either be loved or hated.

I recently attended the IRL race out at MIS and that was LOUD - 20 cars (half the amount in a NASCAR field) running around at 215+MPH for 2hrs. My ears were ringing for 3 days afterwards.

A vintage CanAm or Trans-Am race will also make the earth move ...

techweenie 09-04-2004 07:57 AM

Take your Off.

They sprayed all around the race track last week to suppress the mosquitoes, but Fontana is one of the West Nile hotspots of the state...

rcm 09-04-2004 12:55 PM

You'll have a blast, just all that surrounds the race is awesome. I have attended a few Nascar races and you can't help but have fun. I doubt that you will run into any one that has a stick up thier arse, like maybe at a PCA function.

I have a friend whose marketing company is doing the AOL stuff and she is making a killing ($). Had no interest in Nascar when they got the contract. We're talking intelligent and just sweet lookin' here. Now she is into it and meeting the folks who do it, fund it and love it. She goes everyweek voluntarily now.

84porsche 09-05-2004 12:45 PM

I just got a last minute ticket so I am off to the race. I will post some pix when I get back.
