Some pics from the new Nikon D70

Just picked up the now Nikon today. Got a LOT to learn. These are a couple of quick shots I took tonight on auto settings. This thing is an amazing peice of equipment - so much better than the other cameras I've had.

Mark, I got the same thing. Problem is I have black dots on some of the photos. Isn't on all of them...some are clear, some have a single fuzzy black dot, others have a clealy defined black dot in the same place along with a few others. Looks like dirt somewhere. I'm going to take it back and see what they said.

Great fun though...so nice not to be tied down to automatic. I was doing some slow shutter panning shots of Calvin on his skateboard. Looked like he was going a million miles an hour.

Man, you guys are trying to lure me further to the digital side. You may have seen my other post where I'm trying to get back into film photography and thinking about putting together a film scanner-based digital darkroom. Now I'm (again) tempted to spend the $ on a nice digital SLR. Decisons, decisions.

I've seen some really positive reviews on the D70. Nice shots, you two. Almost makes me wish I had gone Nikon instead of Canon.

Nostat, looks like dust on the CCD. I read that it's a normal maintenance task for dslr's.

I'd love a digital SLR. Need to stick w/ the $120 Canon for now though

I haven't delved deep enough into the instructions to work out how much manual adjustability is available for shutter / aperture. A little more depth-of-field for this shot would be a good thing.

Nice... The D70 is on my "list" but a few months off. I have had good success with the more point-and-shoot variety Nikons and Canons for several years, but they are not easily coerced towards quality/artistic shots in difficult lighting conditions. For example, perhaps I could have done better with manual settings (if I had a clue which tiny buttons to press) but a few of the pics I shot in the blazing desert sun yesterday with a Canon S500 really sucked. It does an excellent job in most conditions, but the zoom is of course pretty crippled and strong sun/shadows really overwhelm it. Lens flare also is an issue and I don't even think (?) you can get filters for some of these compacts as they have retractable and non-threaded lenses.

The D70 is "better" that previous models that were more expensive. The price is reasonable when considered relative to the competition. Pretty much the same price everywhere right now due to MAP.

So what do you need marketing class info for? This isn't rocket science. It is a great camera at a fair price, and you can have it now. This is my first dSLR, so I'm not getting "this year's model", but instead making a leap from pns to slr. So are a lot of people...that is the target audience for this camera. The side benefit is that a fair amount of pros are also buying it becuase it is that good.

yeah, tell that to Motorola and IBM. I'm sure they really don't have yield problems, and instead they just have a stockpile of 3 and 4gig PPC chips just waiting for sales to give them the go-ahead...
