The reality of the assault weapons ban is that it was viewed by the "left" as something that would be acceptable to the masses, that is to say, those who do not really understand firearms. If you take a gun that looks like a military weapon and show someone firing a fully automatic version, it's not very difficult to convince the soccer moms and others that these are a threat to their safety. The left in this country used the AWB as a way to open the door a crack, and leave it open so they could continue to open it little by little until we are no longer allowed to own firearms in this country. I will admit that I see little use for assault weapons other than for target or competition use, however, the average hunting rifle has much more powerful ammunition than any military style weapons with 223 or 308 rounds. If the AWB had been allowed to proliferate, there's little doubt that it would soon have decimated the 2nd amendment. I find it so interesting that the liberals in this country who so virulently defend the 1st amendment, allowing people to burn the american flag in protest for example, yet they find it convenient to try to supercede the 2nd amendment since it "disagrees" with their ideology. Bottom line, it's pure hypocracy.

Agree with all points but one....308 Winchester is a good deer hunting round. .223 Rem. isn't...weak in energy. Being a believer in the bigger club theory, I carry a rifle chambered for 7mm Rem. Mag. for both deer and elk...unless I'm feeling nostalgic and decide to take my old Remington chambered in .257 Roberts on a deer hunt.

I agree that the .308 Win is a good game cartridge, my point was only that if you look at actual energy/balistics, there are many much more powerful cartridges out there. I'm with you on the 7mm Rem Mag, it's a great cartridge. I think my next rifle will be chambered for a .270 WSM. I'm actually debating whether to buy a rifle or another handgun at this point. I've been looking at Kimber 1911A models, and they are pretty sweet!

The NRA sticker in the back window of my old Powerwagon also reads "life member". Nice article on the Kimber carried by our SF guys, yes?

I have NRA stickers on both my wife's car an mine. On my car the NRA sticker's right next to my Porsche crest sticker. As for the Kimber, all I can do is drool. They make some incredible guns. We have a gun shop here in town that is owned by a couple of guys I've done sporting clays with, they carry a bunch of Kimbers and Para Ordinance, both very nice.

My vote is for 358 Win Magnum Flat shooter with the knock down power of a 44mag (at the barrel) at 400yards.
