mission accomplished

a frustrating project comes to a sucessful conclusion. The interior oven glass was broken, so I ordered a new one. That was the easy part. Last night I started trying to figure out how to take the door apart (no manual of course). 3 different sheet of glass. So I figure how to get to the inner glass plane, and there are 7 screws holding the cracked pane on. I can crack 2 of them, but the others aren't budging.

I try heating it, but that doesn't work. So I make a 10"30pm run to Home Depot to get some liquid wrench oand WD-40. Spray some and let it sit for about 15 minutes (I did a lot of this during this job...kept getting pissed off). I crack one more, but the other 4 are not budging...and it's all I can do to keep from stripping them.

Went to GAF in the morning, then attacked it again when I got back. Cracked another one, but 3 were just not going to budge. I was damned if I was going to call a repair guy, and I didn't want to learn how to use an easy out, so I got a few more tools:

Tried to get on the head with vice grips after banging all the broken glass out (figuring that would take some tension off the screw). No go. So I finally end up taking a screwdriver and rubber mallet to it, whacking on the tab that the screw holds down to try and rotate it. I spin it right, then left. Viola! I finally get the last three screws out without stripping them. Then it is just a case of putting the thing back together. If I didn't have a gig tonight, it would be Miller Time:

24 hours for our local HD. Damn convenient, but also eliminates the "honey the hardware store is closed...I'll get to that tomorrow" excuse

Todd, that's a fairly normal looking oven and kitchen. I thought where you lived you would have a large galley style kitchen with maids in freshly starched white aprons hurrying about...

Well Bill, the maids were wearing *only* a starched apron, so I felt compelled to...umm...take care of business.

I think I might have a workmans comp claim on the horizon though. Crisco-related accident.

I was wondering when we'd get picks of this project. Now, if we only had some picks of the Crisco-clad maids ...

disturbing array of tools there static, a grande matia (big hammer), a flat bar, vice grips, and about 15 screw drivers. thats a tool line up that leads me to believe there was a swear work or six muttered.

did you cook up a pot pie to celebrate?

nope, but I believe the wife is doing "make your own pizza night" with her handmade dough (that's what the pizza stone is for in the oven.

Many curse words were uttered. It was just nuts...I would work on it for 2 mintues, yell, go sit down for 15 mintues, go back, try again, repeat. It started with just 2 screwdrivers, but the number of tools increased as the screws continued to taunt me. I didn't end up using the prybar (I'll save that for my watch repair class), but did give the glass a few good whacks to get the pieces loose.

I'm just glad I didn't slice my hand open. For once.

www.CriscoGirls.com does have a nice sheen....err, I mean ring to it.

Good job, Todd. Bet a repair guy would've stripped a screw or two and said "time for a new door".

I have had a lot of success with my Craftsman offset ratcheting screwdriver.
It's easy to hold pressure into the screw head while putting torque to the handle.
