I need some help.
My home machine runs XP. I keep getting the BSOD with a Multiple IRP Complete Request message then a memory dump. I have done a little research to find that two software programs or two hardware items may be fighting over some resource. I have got this before (usually on shotdown) and generally ignored it. Now I am getting it all the time. I don't recall installing anything. My HOA provides internet service and I run a firewall (McAfee). I was getting a bunch of "Land" attacks the other night that were blocked by the Firewall. Is it possible that someone slipped something in and it's screwing up my machine? I tried to start it in "Safe Mode" by pressing F8, but I couldn't get "Safe Mode" to come up - I'm either doing it wrong, or something has taken over. I wanted to see if anyone here had any ideas (or could streer me towards a good self help webite) before I take it to a paid professional. Many Thanks Steve

Google a short description of the problems and that should bring you some hits on windows fix sites. Also go to Microsoft's support site and search around, I think I've solved more problems there than all the other sites combined.

What programs are you running when the error occurs? After the memory dump, what happens? Does explorer close and reboot itself? Does the problem occur on boot-up? Run MSCONFIG from the Run command and uncheck everything on startup tab and reboot, see if you get the same problem.

Also, do you have an anti-virus program with protection against worms etc? Also, you will want to check for spyware on your machine. Download a program called Adaware from www.download.com and update and then run and have it clean your computer.

Sometimes it crashed right after boot up. Yesterday I fired it up and it crashed before I even "logged on".
I will take your advice and see how it goes tonight.

format, install linux. Or buy a mac. I've run linux for the last 3 years on my desktop computer, and just bought a powerbook... NEVER had a lockup.
If there were a lemon list for computer OS's...

Run ad/remove programs - look for stuff that you did not install.
Look in your program files for stuff you did not install. Take note of these odd programs. Download Ad-aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 and Spyblaster. Update virus protection. Reboot in Safe Mode Run Ad-aware Run Spybot Run AV program Install Spyblaster Uncheck all startup programs in MSconfig startup file Reboot in normal mode recheck the program lists to see if there are any changes delete any wierd programs If some programs will not allow access - reboot in safe mode and try to delete Upgrade to XP SP1 and SP2 This should take care of it if you have spyware or viri problems

Since all these Linux Monkey's aren't being helpful I'll try...
If you can get it booted up again check google for the error message. Then download spybot search and destroy and kill any spyware on your machine. Then, abandon Internet Explorer and use Firefox (www.mozilla.org) as it will help you avoid that bad IE programming that can make your problems worse. Disclamer (I'm a UNIX Expert and I use Linux every day)
