Any cowboys or bikers in attendance?

Here in the wild, wild west (north) we say shaps in referring to those leather garments that are worn to protect the legs when riding bulls, horses or bikes.

Lately, I've repeatedly heard them referred to as chaps on American TV. Is this a misnomer on the part of uninformed TV personalities or just another example of bastardization of the english language?

"Chaps" are shaps unless you happen to be making reference to a couple of blokes in the local pub.

yep - makes good sense.

I suppose chaps should be pronounced shaps just like lieutenant should be pronounced left tennant.

English language was meant to be bastardized - there is no other way...

It's chaps.

I have the unique perspective of a longtime motorcyclist married to a longtime equestrian.

LOL! We'll spell and pronounce it shaps if you stop referring to flank-steak sized strips of salted pork as bacon.

Good one, Tabs. As a recovering biker myself, I find this one particularly amusing. Tell ya what; saunter into your friendly neighborhood biker bar where the H.A., Banditos, Gypsy Jokers, Outlaws, or who ever is local hangs out. Then try that line on them. They'll all have a good chuckle, too. Let us know how it goes.

Ha Jeff . . . that would be funny. . . .though I think that I would rather see Purry go into one of those biker-bars and start telling the bikers;
"they're NOT chaps . . they're called shaps."

AHA! Here is a quote directly from a board called The Cowboy Message Board:

"Hi Mustang,

Thanks for posting!

...let them know that from coast to coast, from border to border, undeniably and indisputably, there is but one correct way to say it and that is Shaps. Anyone tell you different isn't a cowboy. Chaps is derived from Spanish word, "chapaderos".

;D

Everyday in the life of a cowboy is a great day, have a cowboy "

I rest my case - how can anyone possibly come up with a more authoritative voice on this subject than the The Cowboy Message Board? (Tabs notwithstanding of course) Besides, I defy any of you to joust with a guy that uses a signature like that!

As best as I can tell,
It has something to do about Purry picking a fight in a gay biker bar over a can of beer and a flank steak.

I think Tabs is waiting outside with some military guy in case Purry needs help.

At least that's what I think is going on...

Oh, and there's something about a horse, but I can't quite put my finger on that part, nor do I want to...

WTF? Are you implying that the correct pronunciation of "chimichanga" is "shimmy-shonga"?

Oh, c'mon. You far underestimate their sense of humor. I don't think a statement like that would be lost on them in the least. They might have a little bit of fun with it at your expense, but hey, just look at it as an opportunity to get to know a few of them a little better. They are really overall a pretty understanding, sensitive group once you get to know them.

Actually, there is heated debate (is there any other kind?) on this subject even on the Cowboy Message Board...

But I gotta tell ya, I'm just about pissin' myself reading some of the posting, avatars and signatures here.

...way too funny Z-man - don't ever let anyone tell you again that you have no sense of humor!

BTW - you have no sense of humor - (just testing, sheesh)
