Terminator signs Bill in CA
Hey Everyone,
Just got emailed by SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association) announcing that even though there was strong opposition, Gov. Schwarzenegger today signed into law the smog check exemption repeal bill. For those that don't know, the new law eliminates the rolling emissions test exemption for vehicles 30 years or older in CA and replaces it with a law requiring lifetime testing of all 76> models. SEMA says that they will live to fight another day, but who knows? Comments? Ralph |

I don't mean to be a dick, but considering the problems that California, the U.S. and the world is facing right now, I have a hard time getting real excited about this. It's been '73-older as long as I can remember, seems reasonable.

That sucks. Really, really, sucks.
The amount of emissions from all of the the 30+year-old cars annually is probably less than the amount from the container ships in Long Beach harbor in ONE DAY! They are targeting the wrong crowd. Politics.

I wish he hadn't done that. Like MikeZ says, if your old smog equipment fails, where are you going to get more?
The value of '74's just went up. His value just went in the toilet, AFIC |

I have a factory muffler and EGR attachment for a mid-year 911 for sale, if anyone needs to smog. Shameless plug.

Here's an article about a 911SC owner upset about the bill:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/09/18/BAGG08QTDM1.DTL If Arnold really wants to cut smog, why don't those #@*$ open piped two-wheeled noisemakers called Harleys have to meet smog tests? Even brand new ones? They are noise polluters as well as emission polluters. Last edited by jkarolyi; 09-23-2004 at 04:15 PM.. |

Might be too late now but I'm at least going to let him know that he has lost my vote on this issue alone.

Someone is going to make some serious $$ by keeping a nice funtioning SC exchaust system available to bolt onto peoples cars for smog tests. I'm thinking of taking mine off now to keep it in good shape and putting it back on every two years for smog only. It makes more sense if your going to drive the car alot and they are going to force you to pass smog every two years. I personnally don't want to go looking for smog parts in 2007

If you are already exempt, then you remain exempt. But if you have a 1976 (like me) and on, then you have to have your car smoged for the rest of its life. Sucks don't it.

Hey, I'd feel a little guilty too and probably sign this bill.
When you've already made YOUR millions with lot's of stuff going up in smoke it's only natural to feel a little guilty and want US to clean up the air. |

ok, bottomline, can a car be registered to a trustworthy texas resident, and just be "on loan" to some poor soul in california? the only glitch i can see, is that if there is an accident, there may be some exposure for the registered owner. (?).
i hope there is a bill that outlaws humvees! the effen musclehead gov.....argggghhh! what a dick. he had the opportunity to keep both sides happy and he blew it.

Get used to it
It's interesting to hear the howls of anger when the Green agenda touches the lives of people who never give it a second thought. The votes were right along party lines. You can figure it out about who cares about people's lives and who wants to advance an agenda no matter who gets hosed in the process. The Gov. is a RINO and this should bring that back to mind lest anybody was fooled by his rhetoric. It's all about the money and the Greens have got it and give it to who will do their bidding.Try having a job in any form of natural resource extraction and you get used to the feeling of the nature nazi's power. Ask any farmer, rancher, logger, fisherman, or miner.

Heres the Bill itsself with recent ammendments: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_2651-2700/ab_2683_bill_20040826_amended_sen.html
Now it says the rolling part of the bill will not go into effect until April 1, 2005. Now if I get my car smogged before that date next year, will my car still be exempt? As the law stands now without the bill, I should be exempt on Jan 1 2005. What's the deal?

That is very painful. It appears that owers with model years of 75 and earlier are exempt for good. Huge draw for the older cars now down there... You can expect to get big money for those in a couple of years and all will start to migrate to CA. On the flip side, all those 76 and newer ones will be dumped cheap in a couple of years because they will not be legal and you really don't want to go to jail for driving your car... Looks like some good deals to come from CA in the near future for us that are on the outside looking in...
