The first eruption of Mt. St. Helens was on the day I graduated from the University of Puget Sound. I took it as a definitive sign from God that I should leave the Northwest.

Guys, TV here in the NW is LOL funny right now...the young reporters standing in front of a camera, the Mt. in the background, babbling constantly, trying to make it all seem interesting. Bottom line? She'll do what she wants to do, when she wants to do it. Little pea-ant mankind really can't do a thing...other than babble, or get the hell out of the way. I'm 150 miles away...should be far enough.

Hey Moses, I was on a speed boat on Lake Washington off of Kirkland when it went. My friend was in tow on skis when he was pointing to the ash plume on the horizon.

It was the interminable cloud cover and drizzle that made me move.

My car was covered with ash. I drove south to California behind snow plows clearing the freeway. Huge piles of volcanic ash everywhere. The air filter on my Toyota allowed the tiny ash particles into the cylinders where they made a nice glass lining. 50% loss of power. Motor ruined.
