If other countries could vote.....

I don't recall seeing anything of this nature happening before.

" Norwegians Place Anti-Bush Ad in Washington Post "

"The Norwegian group "www.tellhim.no" said it used about $50,000 in donations from 4,000 people to fund the advertisement in the Washington Post to tell Bush that 80 percent of people in NATO-member Norway opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1963&e=9&u=/nm/20041012/pl_nm/campaign_norway_dc

I'll hold back on my thoughts for now.....

Regardless of what side you're on, this is meddling with internal elections in the US and was against the law last time I looked.

It's very very scary when other countries look to control our elections.

I wonder how much money France Germany and Russia have contributed to the Manchurian candidate Kerry.
Kerry sure is setting the stage with "global test". . ."wrong war, wrong place, .. . "

All those ketchup factories, scattered about multi-nationally . . .Perfect for channeling bribes and money laundering. I mean ketchup . .. ubiquidous, world-wide ketchup! It's perfect . . Who would suspect?

OTOH, Bush has clearly, consistently put US interests first.

Remember this isn’t the nation of Norway placing ads in a US paper it’s a ‘Norwegian group’. Its not another country meddling in US elections, it’s the Norwegian Political Bikini Team or whatever they’re calling themselves. They have no more authority in representing their country than the NRA would as spokespeople of the USA. Not sure why that’s “very, very scary”.

French, German & Russian governments donating to the Kerry campaign? I haven’t read anything about that

I’ve seen surprisingly little ‘opinion’ on the topic of US elections from any of the countries you mentioned above in the press. Actually I can’t recall anything at all, but maybe its just not reported by major media?

. . .
Not sure why that’s “very, very scary”. !?

They sure the hell don't have OUR best interests in mind.

How is this not completely obvious?

Ya know what is scary? . . . The lib's BICTH about the US influencing other countries, THEN turn around and claim it's okay for other countries to influence US. WTF?

I think its scary that they think it will have any effect

I sort of see this as evidence that the libs should ***** about the US influencing other countries. These Norwegian individuals would only be doing this if they felt that the US actions were somehow managing to influence their lives half a world away.

Hey, if 4,000 Norwegians want to spend $12.50 apiece to air their views in a US newspaper, more power to them!

Now, do 3,999 of you want to contribute $12.50 to take out an ad in a The Norway Post urging them to cease and desist from any business relationships with Libya? http://www.norwaypost.no/content.asp?folder_id=9&cluster_id=26336

Send a message via AIM to Overpaid Slacker
How much would anybody care if the ad was funded by Algerians, Iranians, Syrians, Sudanese or Cubans?

Great question!

I think we should just cancel this election and just have Bush serve another 4 years. After all, it's obvious this is the "wrong election, at the wrong time".

Until we can hold an election that passes the "Global Test", we're surely doing a dis-service to the rest of the world.

And that's what is really important, isn't it?

Randy

I've been to Norway. Let me note, you don't tell/urge Norwegians to do anything that they don't want to do.

I wish we had more of that here.

Its not another 'country' it’s a bunch of Norwegians that have some opinion. If political ads are not allowed this close in to the election then it obviously shouldn’t be run- I don’t know if this is the case.

Anyone is free to voice an opinion of the government of this or other countries where the press is as free, or freer than here in a similar manner. I imagine a bunch of Norwegians would respond to a newspaper ad placed by a rag tag bunch of Americans in the same way most readers would respond to the above ad- indifference or resistance.
I don’t find this ‘very scary’- it seems more like a ‘problem’ of democracy. I guess you could restrict speech in the press to citizens but then there would be nothing to stop an expatriate Norwegian for acting as a local rep for his actor buddies.

If another nation was providing funding to a particular political campaign in the US that would be ‘very, very scary’. There’s a vast difference between that & free speech.
