Camera shopping, Nikon coolpix 5400

I'm camera shopping. Ive been waiting for the prices to drop on the 5700 for about two years now. I guess thats not going to happen. What do you guys think of the 5400? What else is out there in the $500 price range.

TIA

The 4200 hundred is nice too.

I think that prices are going to keep dropping as the quality keeps getting better across the board. I wouldn't pay more than 250. that's just me tho.

Try Ebay - people (like me) who move up from 4 mp cameras to 8mp often sell super kit at a low price.

I have the 5000 Nikon and its nice but bulky. For a sub $200 camera get the Nikon 3700 ($100 rebate so its $153) for a pocket digital that rocks.

Nikon lense compatibility

that's my thread on nikon cameras. i want an slr, though. i'm looking at d100s on ebay (used but in excellent condition) for ~700$. if you have lenses taht you can use, i'd recommend looking into it.

Having used both Nikon and Olympus digitals over the past several years, I have to say I prefer the Olympus picture quality and color rendering over the Nikon. They are both excellent cameras, though. I just like the Olympus's output better.

I'd look at the Canon digicams too. When I bought the Canon G3 a few years ago, I compared it closely to the equivalent Nikon Coolpix. My feeling was that the Canon had more traditional controls (more things could be controlled with dials rather than on-screen menus) that appealed to me, having grown up with traditional film cameras. I don't know if this is still true now.
