Yes, afghanistan was a prime contributor to the collapse of the USSR.
And unfortunately we are not spending enough resources on getting OBL because bush was too interested in wasting our tax dollars and military resources on iraq instead. |

One thing is for sure OBL and his clan did their research before releasing this particular tape. Know your target audience and play to them, tell them what they want to hear and the'll buy into what you have to say. This is why the transcript sounds so much like the Kerry campaign, same audience, easy target, lambs to the slaughter.
And while we're on the subject of the left's favorite sons, it's probably a study of Micheal Moore's tactics that led directly to the script of this new message. Same thing, ask them what they want to hear, tell them what they want to hear, collect $$$'s at the door. You can bet MM is hoping for both a Bush victory and that the elections hit the courts; another movie and boatloads of left dollars. Damn, this guy's a Republican. |

The War in Afganistan was not what did the USSR in. It was trying to maintain parity with the US with a fraction of our GDP.

Yes, 350 is correct, Afghanistan helped tremendously to the insolvency of the USSR. I'll never take anything away from Reagan placing the final straw on the camel's back, but remember, the Cold War was a losing effort for Russia since WWII. They did not have the infrastructure to keep up with us. Reagan was "the great communicator" in this regard, "giving the people what they want to hear" much like OBL is (according to some) doing now. Afghanistan, however, destroyed the USSR economically and morally. Their Vietnam: absolutely correct. A horrible expedition that sealed Gorbachev's fate. I highly recommend the film "The Tank" for a good insight into Russia's debacle that was Afghanistan. "Rambo III" I don't recommend except for a drunken laugh.
