How to reunite the country
If Bush really wanted to make everybody happy, and to start the process of healing a divided america, here is what he should do: take Kerry in his governement ! Acknowledge his input, get to know the guy, work together ! There are many positions that Kerry could fill, since he had so many plans...But I am serious: would not it be nice to see republicans and democrats work hand in hand, find some common grounds ? It is so distressing to hear each party call the other stupid, while we all know that both have part of the solutions...

Aurel, I had thought the same thing. I don't think a cabinet position is a promotion over Senator though.

That is the whole point: politicians should not be career driven, but only motivated by the desire to serve the public best, even if it implies a lesser position. Imagine the impact and the great example this would have on the public...Kerry does not need any money, anyways

Agreed, I just don't know that a cabinet position, say Secratary of State, would actually have more influence than being a senior member of the legislative branch. That being said, I think S of S would be a great position for the Senator were it offered.

The President, like Arnie, doesn't need to listen to losers.

Ok, cool. I have had similar thoughts about Kerry.
But any reconciliation is a 2-way street. What do you think would be an appropriate and equally as meaningful gesture by the Democrats? Clearly, G has to take the first step. And maybe the second step. But based on the hatred and closed minded comments I have seen on this BB, I doubt they will be acknowledged much less accepted and reciprocated. At what point is he justified in saying that a majority of Americans elected him and it is his duty to fulfill the promises he made during the campaign? I am pretty sure that others have said this, but what really scares me is the total rejection by the hard core left that maybe, just maybe, it is that THEY are out of touch. . . The left knows what is best for all of us and that we are just uneducated / naive / unsophisticated / dolts. Their attitude has turned personal and is no longer a debate of ideas. Until there is a fundamental change in this attitude, IMHO, the left will be more and more marginalized.

I am of the belief that both sides (left and right) have some good things and some bad things in their beliefs. I feel that a balance of the two thoughts is the best for the people. If adhered to strict right, I feel we could end up being a third world country that is as radical religiously as some of these muslim states. If adhered to strict left, no one would work and it'd be a free-for-all situation. But with the two sides compromising when needed and balancing their theories, it's the best for all. So, IMO it's not that the left knows all that's right, nor the right knows all that's right, they're both right. |

Like it or not, Mr Bush will make superficial efforts to "heal the wounds," but that's all it will be. It will all be about appeasing the left without really giving in to what it wants. He may make some minor concessions, but will make no major sacrifices to his agenda. And before you start squealing like Ned Beatty, the same crap happens in every corporation, every state/local government and every charitable organization, every day. Kerry would have done the same thing.

![]() So, Aurel, what about Ralph Nader? He lost too. What kind of concession prize should he get?

If I though you were really trying to help, I would be shocked...but I know you would really prefer the administration to fail....and this would be a good first step in that direction.
