Has the U.S. perfected democracy?
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956) |

The US is a representative Republic, not a democracy.

Perfection is an honorable goal, and should be strived for. However, perfection is also not possible, as we human beings are not perfect. There will always be room for improvement.
Though most everybody has the same goals, lower crime, stronger economy, reduction of poverty, etc., there will always be differing views on how to acheive these goals, and passionate, well-meaning people will argue over these differing ideas long after I am gone. The minute you begin to take the Repblic for granted it will be gone... Democracy or Repblics are fragile things that always need to be watched over...Nobody has yet to come up with a Democracy that has llasted much past 200 years...the only real exception has been Great Britain..
Some people have argued that America ceased to be a Repblic at the begining of the Cold War..1948 and became a National Security State... I think if the Democratic Party had fielded a Moderate canidate instead of a extremely Liberal canidate...they would have won the election...the great majority of Americans do not subscribe to the Liberal platform. The Liberal platform has yet to put anyone in the White House...starting with A. Stevenson back in the 1950's....

Tabs - you are right on. The Democratic ticket does it's best work in executive offices with moderate candidates and is successful at the local level with more wild-eyed candidates. Which in my opinion is the way is should be for either party as a more wild-eyed candidate for either side will represent the will of less of a majority than a moderate candidate will.
Of course in my opinion if in 2000 the republicans had fielded McCain - Gore would have lost hands down instead of loosing with all the hub-bub he did. And of course- I would gladly vote for McCain over Bush every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
