Portable DVD player?

Summer holidays are around the corner. I'm considering getting a portable DVD player to keep the kids occupied in the back seat on the trek down to Cape Town. They used the laptop last year running off a power inverter, but it's still too bulky.

Anyone with any experience of specific models? What about battery life/power sources? What screen type to get?

Did I mention that summer is here?

I've used several of them to entertain my 4 year old on trips. In spite of the variance in prices they all offer about the same picture quality. Right now the 7" screens seem to be the best bang for the buck. I think all of them come with both 12 volt and 120 volt adapters and at least one set of headphones. If you have more than one kid you will need a splitter, although the player I have right now has 2 headphone outlets. Finally look to see how you can mount it for the back. The one I have attaches to the headrest of one of the front seats. Some are set up to sit between the 2 front seats.

I've been looking at 7" Audiovox units and settled on the D1710. Search Dealtime for the best price.

IMHO for not a ton more money you may want to consider a small laptop computer (subnotebook) as it can play DVD's but also is much more versatile.

Fortunately my 3 yr old son has not yet learned that it is possible to watch videos/tv in the car It's just a matter of time before somebody at preschool spills the beans, though.
