OMG, Look what arrived on my doorstep....Communications engineers, what is this?

OK, get home last night and there's a large box at the door.
I had won an auction earlier in the week for a piece of machinery...but packaged it shouldn't have been so large...hmmm.

I drag the thing to the foyer and leave it there as I figured I'd open it in the morn.

Open the box this AM and there's a large plastic equipment type case with handles and casters. What the....?

I open the case and see many components strategically packed into the case. After a 1/2 hour of assembly this is what I have...

Apparently it's some type of Sattellite transceiver...Maganavox MX2400T. A cost tag on the case says it's $57K !!! Anyone know about this thing? Google turmed up little info. Also, it states in several places that the end user requires certification. I hope the FBI doesn't end up at my house.

Any info is appreciated.

Thats what the side line guys use in the NFL to listen in on the ggggrrrrr, umhhh, ahhhhh, hut hut hike, mumbo jumbo. Or is that those clear plastic ones? Anyways, hook it up! See if it makes any funny sounds.

Warren never visits the OT board, but I'm thinking that if anyone here would know, it would be he, the retired NASA rocket scientist.

dhoward 11-20-2004 12:16 PM

INMARSAT tranceiver.
If you've got all the goodies, you could make and take satellite calls.
Cool.

RoninLB 11-20-2004 01:08 PM

does this mean you could order Pizza Hut from Timbucktu ?

island911 11-20-2004 01:08 PM

Damn

phone calls!? .. ..that looks like you could send all kinds of info .. .video etc.

Start a news station. ;)

Eric Coffey 11-20-2004 01:47 PM

Inmarsat/Irridium Satcom tansceiver? Brings a whole new meaning to "can you hear me know?" :D

stomachmonkey 11-20-2004 01:55 PM

Satellite phone

Here's how to make it work,

http://www.ablecommunications.com/customerservice/magnavox/magnavox.html

RickM 11-20-2004 02:07 PM

OK, it has a sticker that says Magnavox MX2400T Plus, Transportable Satcom Terminal.

On the dish it states: Caution Microwave Radiation Hazard Stay back 10 feet. I bet I could get Bin Laden with this thing....
or rehaet that pizaa from Timbuktu real quick.

I don't think I have everything needed to make her work.
I'll bet a laptop and/or handset hooks up to this pup.

Warren, Can you here me now? heh heh

dhoward 11-20-2004 02:52 PM

At the least, a handset.
You could probably fire it up and roast your weenies from across the patio, though....
:D

BigD9146gt 11-20-2004 03:09 PM

Way cool Rick, keep us updated!!!!

1973911s 11-20-2004 03:33 PM

Wait tell you find out that your CIA neighbor, or the large FBI tech field office in Morristown, comes calling for it.

Looks cool.

Michael

Its probably left over from an undercover operation near you. See if you can help ET phone home.

RickM 11-20-2004 04:12 PM

Actually it came from Fort Meade in Maryland.
Wonder what the market for something like this is.... Maybe partial trade for a 993TT :D

Shuie 11-20-2004 05:39 PM

That would be cool to look at. I wouldnt have a clue what to do with it. Throw it up on the bay and see if you can flip it for a nice profit

DannoXYZ 11-20-2004 08:07 PM

I bet you can talk to aliens with it! :)

One of my friends in the Navy told me of a cruel game they used to play. They'd wait until a seagull would fly in front of their radar dish, then they flip it to full ON. The seagull would fall out of the sky fully cooked! :(

BGCarrera32 11-20-2004 08:56 PM

Looks like that seal Magnaphone thingie Steven Segal used in the movie "Under Siege" :D

BGCarrera32 11-20-2004 09:18 PM

This reminds me...

I heard a story about a guy many years ago who found a cool looking stereo amplifier thing at a surplus store. The box had gold plated rca/stereo jacks on the back and some mystery connectors but no real markings so he took the chance paying $20 for it and went home. He didn't have much luck connecting this thing but decided it was an amp of some sort...ultimately he did find the box was stamped "Raytheon...mfg'd in USA...serial number blah blah blah".

After some directory assitance and finally getting bounced around to a few phone operators at Raytheon, he asked for a manual or some instructions. Obviously this guy had no idea what Raytheon makes. The operator was confused, asked for details about what he had, then asked for a serial number, and then the operator played dumb and took his address...

30 minutes later a couple MP's showed up at the guy's door and confiscated the box. Ultimately the guy found what he had was some sort of signal amp for a nuclear missle silo that somehow was stolen and ended up in this surplus shop. He never got his $20 back.

M.D. Holloway 11-20-2004 09:31 PM

just a peice of junk, it's crap, you can spend your time much better working on your cars - I'll give you $1000 for it just to rid you of the torment of trying to find out what it is. Really, $2000 and that includes shipping - I'll even drive to your place get it - $3000?

I'll give ya fity cent for it :)

Eric Coffey 11-21-2004 05:13 PM

The problem is that $57k price tag is most likely what the Govt. paid for it (however many years ago) and it is now just surplus. It is probably worth less than $1k these days.

Don 944 LA 11-21-2004 05:57 PM

I once had a Freq Counter that cost $38,000 ( GigaTronics ) just cuz it went into the higher Ghz range ... probably could buy for $300 now.

RickM 11-21-2004 06:28 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking this technology is handheld now....at least for a lesser capacity. This may be a "Base Station" of some sort as one cryptic invoice states. Oh well, it's packed up in it's case. If the rest of the unit were here I would've tried it.... Warning Will Robison, Warning!

dhoward 11-22-2004 07:49 AM

I believe you can get most of the functionality now in an Iridium handheld sat phone....

azasadny 11-22-2004 11:36 AM

You can hear a mouse get a hard-on with that thing!!

RoninLB 11-22-2004 01:19 PM

can you give it back to the mfg for a credit ?

"I mean it was a present and I would rather have your #$% model. It's brand new mister."

dad911 11-22-2004 01:31 PM

For a laugh, I would try returning it to a local Radio Shack. Just tell them your wife bought it as a gift last week....

RickM 11-22-2004 01:45 PM

LOL, youz guys are killin me. It was made by Maganavox in Deer Park New York....not tooo far from here. Do they have an outlet store, Ron? lol

bell 11-22-2004 04:34 PM

cool stuff.........if anything it'll be a good conversation piece :D

Saintly 11-22-2004 04:44 PM

Why no tilt it back so it's pointing straight up, remove the white center probe thing, get a peice of glass cut to fit over it and use it as a coffee table... would make a good ice breaker / conversation item. ;) :D

notmytarga 11-30-2004 12:41 AM
