Can't get it any place but here

Noticed that different places have stuff you can't get anyplace else - up in Canada, they make these candy bars, Coffee Chrisps, not bad. In Iowa they have something called Twin Bings (choc, peanut, cherry) candy bars - can't get them in Texas.

Can ya all list out any candy bars or store bought prepared foods that are only available locally / regionally?

john70t 12-10-2004 03:05 AM

nope, but I've got a jonesing for some memphis-style web ribs about now.

oldE 12-10-2004 03:49 AM

Dulse. Seaweed, which grows on the rocks between high and low tide (Up to 50 feet here around the Bay of Fundy). Dulse is sort of dark red-purple in color. Individual pieces are from 5 to 10 inches in length. After picking, it is spread to dry, then packed in sacks and delivered to grocery stores, or the harvester packs it in one pound bags himself for retail sale. It is of course, a bit salty. Some say it is an aquired taste.
Yummy.

Topors Pickles and Faygo soft drinks, White castle burgers, and real coney dogs.

Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches (bread makes the difference), pizza from New Haven CT (Pepe's, Sally's or Modern Pizza - nothing like it), Clam Fritters from Cape Cod.

Joeaksa 12-10-2004 05:42 AM

Living out West, I really miss Steak N Shake burgers... Then comes the old European connection. Twiglets, Lemon Curd and some authentic fish and chips. Hop across the channel and a good Schnitzel mit pommes with a weitzen bier. Hong Kong dim sum comes to mind as well...

Ribs is a good call but I make my own and they are close enough to Memphis style to cure that issue...

50/50 softdrink, Mello Yello.

mattdavis11 12-10-2004 10:18 AM

Dans/ Frans hamburgers, only in Austin that I know of.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/kwijl.gif

Stonewall/Fredricksburg peaches, but beware, if your wife/significant other gets you near Fredricksburg, you'll soon find yourself liking this position much betterhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/hanged.gif

Funny story, traffic was stopped at a red light in Fredericksburg. A friend and I were returning from a hunting trip, and the truck in front of me has blood on the tailgate and antlers visible in the bed. I was jealous because I didn't get anything. Then, when the light turned green, a lady standing at the cross walk noticed his "cargo" and the blood as we went past. The horrified OMG!, hand over mouth look made me laugh uncontrollably.

Actually, that reminds me, the Stonewall Smoke House is an excellent place to have a deer processed. When I’m lazy, I’ll drop mine off there, or I do it myself.

There isn't anything that I can't get...with a telephone call...except Texas Hot Links from The Gonzales Market in Gonzales Texas.

Somebody complained about him shipping the stuff so the health department came down on him.

If there is a correspondent on this Board who lives near there and is willing to go in an order the stuff in person he will still ship...and that would be much appreciated.

Blue Bell ice cream - only in Texas. It's one of the reasons I moved back.

mattdavis11 12-10-2004 10:51 AM

Tabs, I'm only a little over an hour away, I think I can hook a brother up. How much do you want? It may be a week or so until I can free myself to get down there, but it won't be much of a hassle. Send me a PM.

Good call on the Blue Bell, Mark. If you don't leave you tend over look it.

Great candy from the Pacific Northwest:

Vernell's Butter Mints -- long gone, but not forgotten

Aplets and Cotlets -- Do they still make 'em?

dhoward 12-10-2004 11:06 AM

dhoward 12-10-2004 11:14 AM

Got any Whataburgers?

Eric Coffey 12-10-2004 11:15 AM

They just opened a Sonic here, but it's not the same. Must have changed the ingredients along the line. I'm looking for a 1990 version.

No Whataburgers here in Cali.

I remember wondering, and I mean _really_ wondering in the middle of nowhere east of Norton, KS a few years back, and we literally stumbled upon an OLD old old A&D, literally, we went from a corn field to this smallish town with an A&D, totally amazing. never have found the place again. Maybe it was a mirage.

Overpaid Slacker 12-10-2004 11:33 AM

I love White Castle, and I can get 'em in NYC area. mmmmmm

Definitely Modern Apizza in New Haven!!! and Pepe's (and it's affiliated neighbor, The Spot) damned fine eats there.

I prefer Pat's, King of Steaks myself.

Chowder at the Black Pearl in Newport, RI. Best damned chowdah in the world. :D While we're in that jurisdiction, I really miss Dark 'N Stormies after a full day on the boat.

Upstate NY foods -- spiedies and salt potatoes (Homer drooling sound).

Aplets and Cotlets?

Blech... when I moved to Seattle, someone said you have to try this local favorite...

Believe me, I would love to export all of them to Malibu.

Good donuts, bagles or Tastycakes here in the North West.

Overpaid Slacker 12-10-2004 12:04 PM

Holy crap, they have good bagels in the PNW? OK, I can believe that, I guess ... but have you had the real deal here in Brooklyn (Avenue N is my personal fave). Most bagels I get elsewhere can't compare, and some are terrible but b/c that's what the locals are used to they think they're good.

JP

genrex 12-10-2004 12:15 PM

You can order Aplets and Cotlets via telephone, and perhaps even online. My Mom likes the chocolate-covered ones. She gets the ones in the plastic baggies.. it's a new product line called "seconds" or "blems" or something like that, and they're much cheaper than the overpriced regular ones. :)

Huh, I don't know of any good bagels in the PNW.. the closest I know of are in LA and NYC.

I miss the old A & W root beer! Is it still sold anywhere? That canned stuff is pretty bad..

porsche356a 12-10-2004 01:10 PM

I meant that there are no good bagles or donuts in the PNW, and you can't get Tastycakes.

I am an East Coaster born and raised.

MMMMMMmmmmmmmm

I grew up in Upstate NY. Ever had Spiedies? Marinated grilled lamb on Italian bread...

No one's ever heard of them. I get some of the spiedie marinade from a friend who goes back there, but its semi mass produced and just isn't as good as the ones from Sharkies Bar in Binghamton, NY.

"Originally from Italy, this delicacy seems to be found only in the Broome County area of New York State. How and when spiedies came to this area, having never been documented, remains a mystery.

Traditionally, spiedies were made from lamb. Today, however, they are made from lamb, pork, chicken, veal, venison, and beef. The cubes of meat are marinated in a sauce as varied as the types of people that enjoy them."

Tabs - prehaps the best hot links ever can be found in Tyler Texas at a place called Raes. They are more addicting that crack! You can't just eat 5, 10 to 12 puts you in a mood like a duck at a junebug convention.

These things ouze grease, gauroonteed to raise for lipid count 300 points.

I've had these in the states. DC, Oregon, even Montana.

Cozy Inn burgers in Salina, KS (http://www.plainsfolk.com/oases/oasis27.htm). I'm pretty sure White Castle stole the idea from this place.
