Yep; you've gotta cover your bases. "Beware of Dog" and "No Trespassing" signs. Reasonable and obvious locks on exteriors gates and doors. Appropriate insurance from solvent, reputable companies. Lighting. Situational awareness! Good neighbors. SHTF plans and provisions.
FWIW our Akita has been a blessing and a curse. The breed in general is intensely protective and loyal, and very handsome, but if you want/need to have unfamiliar visitors regularly, it can be a non-trivial risk and hassle. Even something as simple as weekly gardener visits requires vigilence and planning.
