Is sleep deprivation a torture ?

I am just asking your opinion. Sure there is no physical contact, but if someone prevented me from sleeping, I sure would feel like they are torturing me. It is, at least, a form of moral torture, which can be as painful as physical torture. So, what should be the real definition of a torture ? Isn`the distinction between physical/no physical a little hypocritical ?

Sure. Whatever. It's all a matter of degree. Can we redefine torture as "making one uncomfortable"? Is putting womens panties on Mustafas head torture?

Maybe asking questions of a suspect in an unfriendly tone might be torture if the suspect is a very sensitive type.

The bigger question is; Is it ever acceptable to use torture as part of an interrogation?

My oldest son attended a military school last year, and the leaders there made it very clear from the start that not getting sleep was a very effective way to "correct" the students. My son tells me it does indeed work, and was much more "attention getting" than just physical stuff (push ups, etc.) they administered.

I paid a lot of money during the early 80's to be sleep deprived...

I am sleep deprived every morning when I have to get up for work. Any lawyers wanna take this case? We can break new ground!

Police in New Orleans once solve the murder of an officer in an afternoon using nothing more than a plastic bag. THey rounded up "the usual suspects," one by one, cuffed them to a chair, asked a question. If they did not percieve the answer to be sufficiently sincere they would slip the plastic bag over the subject's head & allow him some time to reconsider his answer. No bruises just truth. The officers were later tried in a famous case known as the Algiers Seven.

Q: Is sleep deprivation a torture ?
A: If so, then the Universities across the USA and most hi-tech corporations are guilty of torture. Amnesty International should sue Cornell University on my behalf!

Torture? These are the same chowder heads that are complaining that having ladies underwear on your head and blasting AC/DC all night is torture.........Heck, that's a helluva party in my book! I was then sleep deprived in college, and survived on JOLT cola and Hostess chocolate gems.........

Most 1 year olds should be reported to the UN. Cruel and unusual way to treat your parents, crying all night...

Moses 01-05-2005 06:53 AM

So Aurel. Looks like most folks don't think sleep deprivation is torture. Am I the only one who thinks it is torture? (And I'm completely OK with using it, by the way.)

Give me 15 minutes and I will have them singing.

It just takes a pair of vice grips, a bottle of Heet. Some Green Tabasco and an eye dropper.

The vice grips are attached to the Thumb. the Heet is put on there Balls.
A couple of drops of tabasco in the mouth. Then start tighting the vise grips a little at a time.

Then you tell them Talk or I will put the Bottle of Tabasco in their eyes one drop at a time.

Sleep deprivation has been used by the military to help train recruits in boot camp for a long time. Sleep deprivation helps get someone to do what you want, but it's not torture...
