My Mother Died Today - A Sad Day

On 3:30AM today, my Mother passed away. She spent the past 7 years battling Alzheimer’s disease. She came into this world a poor depression era self described “shanty Irish Catholic”, and fortunate to marry her childhood sweetheart. She is survived by three sons and a daughter, eight grandchildren and a great-grand child.

My Father took care of her until she was unable to walk or talk. With great sadness he admitted her into a convalescent home three years ago for monitored care. He spent every day with her, from 9:00AM till 6:00PM everyday – washing her, feeding her, reading to her, rubbing lotion on her feet and pestering the nurses and aids. My Father did this everyday for the past three years.

Her first and last years were as difficult as anyone can imagine. The middle years were filled with joy and hope. She was a liberal democrat, a story teller, a poet and an artist and married a strong republican, WWII vet and math genius. At the end, she showed no signs of cognitive ability or recollection. She died quietly in her sleep. May she now rest.

Mike,

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. She sounds like she was a great woman...aren't all moms?

I lost my mother just over a year and a half ago. It hurts.

Sorry, Mike. God bless her and comfort her now.

Mike, my deepest sympathies on your loss, Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease that robs us of our loved ones long before their time... may she rest in peace and your pain turn quickly into fond memories of the good times you had together.
Sam.

Nothing but good thoughts for you and yours...

Sorry to hear of your loss.

My dad died 20 years ago, just shy of his 50th birthday. My mom is still going strong..............all of a sudden I'm feeling guilty for not calling her about Thanksgiving.

It must be like watching the Titanic go down...never knowing what the next turn of events will be but knowing that she is sinking ever deeper. Now the struggle is over and there is relief in that the issue is now settled. Now all that remains are memories of a life lived and an empty space that she once filled. May God Bless...

Hey Mike,

She sounds like a wonderful and interesting lady that was complemented by a true gentleman. Celebrate her life well, and be strong my friend.

My deepest sympathy and condolences, my Grandma went in a similar fashion and the sad thing was that we lost her several years before she actually died. When she passed away, it was a relief that she was going to heaven to be with her husband and son who were already there, in our way of thinking. She is not the one suffering now, it's you. Just remember that, and please, please take good care of yourself and your Dad in this difficult time the way that your Mom would want you to.

Good luck, God Bless and everything is going to be alright. Thanks for sharing this w/ us.

Very sorry for your loss.

They say Alzheimer's is merciful on the victims, who don't know what they've lost. But it's pure hell for all the loved ones. Let's hope there's a cure found soon.

We should all be so lucky as to have the support your father provided her in her final years.

Mike:
May you find comfort in this sad time.

I admire your father's dilligence - I pray that he find peace through this difficult time.

It's never easy to lose a parent. Try and remember her in the good times.

So sorry for your loss. She's in a better place, and now she (and your father) can rest. God bless you and your family.

The death of loved parents always hurts. Given time, it hurts less. This was said to me at my mother's funeral by a friend who lost his barely 30 year old wife to cancer. He knew, and he was right. Do hang on to the good times memories.

You have our prayers and the hopes that many men can be the good man your father is.
