Anyone saw the Overhaulin' episode with the Olds 442?

Seems like when they were "stealing" it the car overheated on the freeway, and now the motor knocks. Nobody wants to take responsibility...

Long read, but "LandShark" is the wife...

here's where you can download that episode: http://megatron.stonehill.edu/video/overhaulin_68442.wmv

(link fixed)

ok I just read most of landsharks posts (man..she has some long posts) and it seems to me that they really got screwed by TLC. Too bad they didn't have the legal resources to pursue a case. I think they had a good point with her saying in writing to the show not to drive the car on the freeway and then having them doing doughnuts and driving of the freeway. Anyway, I pretty much lost faith in all "reality TV" style shows a while ago. How much reality is it when they combine 7+ days of footage into less than 40 min of show?

I think this situation underscores a much larger point.
When the owners were talking about how the car was returned: i.e. no backup lights, no shift indicator, no antenna etc. It really gets me thinking... These shows are all about the bling. All about the cool flashy parts. It can be compared to the import tuner crowd in that "bolt on" is the word of the day. The fact that these guys take a car and "attempt" to restore it in 7 days is ridiculous. It's not possible. I bet you a months pay they cut many more corners than were taped and aired. In the wife's remarks she mentioned they somehow crimped a brake line while installing the exhaust system. That's just plain ignorant!

This crosses over into other forms of entertainment... While You Were Out, Trading Spaces, Pimp My Ride, Monster House (that one gives me the creaps) etc. When things are rushed I can only imagine the resulting screwups and sloppy work left behind after the cameras are turned off.

But, it's ok... you Fly... you got a 42" Plasma screen TV in the trunk of your Fiesta or a cell phone launcher in the center console of your Escort. That's where it's at!

True...7 days just isn't a whole lotta time. Sometimes on Overhaulin' Chip Foose is on camera saying it's 4 in the morning and they are still trying to figure something out...it's just plain crazy. But the only reason why I watch Overhaulin' is to watch Chip Foose in action. That guy is just awesome...

I agree with Leland. Plus the "undercover detective" BS in OverHaulin just plain bores me. OverHaulin is American HotRod with a better boss. It seems Foose is talented. The last episode I saw, he was crying because his dad came out of retirement to help him with a 64 Vette. Chip is up too late and around too many paint fumes it would seem. I can't understand the rush to build these. I know when I stay up too late working on my car, strange things happen!

I wouldnt trust my car to Chip Foose, West Coast Customs, Jesse James Ty Pennigton, those gay fashion guys and especially not Boyd Coddington.

The point of a custom in my mind is something you built yourself, (granted, I'd have Kevin paint it) I dont like the idea of not knowing exactly how everything on the car is assembled.

Kinda' off, kinda' on topic: My friend's wife said she knew someone who was on/whose house was in trading spaces. And well, to echo what's been said already...they (the show's workers/organizers - I clearly don't watch the show) almost wrecked their house -

but it looked good on TV...

Workmanship - shoddy
Overall design - lacking
Aesthetic (sp?) - awful from most angles but one...

But I might let Jesse James F with my ride though...maybe

The way they rush things on these shows (Overhaulin', Trading Spaces, etc.), they must absolutely have to cut corners on stuff. I bet these rooms and cars are really disasters underneath that shiny paint...

They way they toss these interiors and stereo/video systems in these cars at the last possible second on Overhaulin' seems like a receipe for disaster in the long term... I've done quite a few systems in cars over the years and if you want a solid system that's wired correctly, tucked away neatly and not just hacked in (and have an install to be proud of) takes quite a bit of time. Many times you see the interiors guys b*tching and itching to get at the car so they can do their thing. These guys always seem to get the shaft as far as not having enough time to get things in place.

Sometimes they barely get these cars running before the final reveal to the poor sap who's car got 'stolen'.

That's why I'm way more impressed with what goes on in Monster Garage. That show's very clear about their goals....FUNCTION, FUNCTION, FUNCTION. It may look crappy, but man, that PT Cruiser can sure chip a LOT of wood!
