How much is a '71 Karmann Ghia convertible worth?

Roughly, how much do these things go for in decent condition?

That's my all-time favorite car.

The prices are all over the place at theat site:
http://thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=13

I've seen a few in Hemming's last year.....................912's are cheaper.

There is a guy with a pretty nice one in town (edit: it's a coupe), he paid a couple thousand for it, been offered $4,500 from a walk-up.

Many of the good convertibles are asking around $7,000.......................not from me.

It depends what you mean by decent condition. If the top needs replacing, that's an important - and expensive - item, so the value would be reduced accordingly. Body condition, modifications, any problems with the car, maintenance records.. all of these must be considered. But 1971 is the last year of the early bumpers, and that makes it a desireable year.

Bear in mind that the prices in The Samba's classified ads are asking prices, and people often ask far more than the car is actually worth. It is amusing, and those ads are good for entertainment purposes only. But yes, if you read a few pages of ads on The Samba, you will get a general idea of the car's value.

edit: you could always post an ad on The Samba asking the price that you would like to get, and see what kind of responses you receive.. ignoring the numerous low-ballers, of course.. and then change your ad if necessary. Better yet, you should ask this question on the Karmann Ghia forum on that website.

My dad had one (a 72 though) in MINT condition that he sold for $7500. It sold as soon as the ad came out in the paper, and the guy gave him cash on the spot. He could have gotten over $10k easily. I loved that car!!!! That was the car that started my love affair with German cars.

From my (recent) research... $5K-$10K, depending upon condition and originality. Rust is a big problem...

Buy it, buy it, buy it. I'd love one of those things but we don't get many (convertable Karman Ghias) in right hand drive here in New Zealand. I think it's going to a good investment and nice to drive

I restored and sold my '66 in 2001 for $10,000. It was given as a wedding gift by the buyer to his wife. It was probably in nicer shape than your average KG cabrio, I used to show it fairly often:

Mink's car will have nicer lines than a 70+ Ghia. The front turn signals and tail lights were made bigger to comply with some DOT reg. The 69 and prior cars are very cool. In particular, a 69 will have the benefit of early lights and a glass rear window in the convertible top and disc brakes in the front. Apart from rust issues, a 69 Ghia convert. is a great car.
