W. might have been slow on the up-take, but the bucks are kicking in now..
WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 - President Bush on Wednesday increased the United States tsunami relief pledge to $950 million, nearly tripling America's contribution. The additional $600 million would put the United States, which was criticized initially as reacting slowly to the disaster, ahead of Australia, which has pledged $750 million, and Germany, which has pledged $680 million, among the top donors. This on top of $700 in private donations.. I hope this money is well spent..for the victims sakes.. |

Well, you're right about one thing. Dubya's slow on the uptake. I mean, this is the part of the world that is most competitive labor-wise. If I was the US and the other countries were kids on the playground, I'd become China's friend. I guess that, after a series of memos and briefings, Dubya figured that out too.

Pledges are one thing, payment is another. A story running in the paper last night pointed out that most of the money pledged for relief has yet to materialize. This includes money from the U.N. and nations around the world, including our own. It's too bad that in the face of such a terrible dissaster, it appears the grandstanding has begun, at least to a degree. Why do nations, individuals, or the U.N. feel the need to announce what they intend to give? What ever happened to just quietly doing what needs to be done to help, without keeping score?

Jeff - point well taken. But hopefully with Bush and the US Congress that needs to vote on such stuff, it is not about keeping score. Like most things, Bush is not always the perfect politician. He would have got more mileage with more tears and less money weeks ago. The media has moved past this story in a big way, this was not big news yesterday..
