garage heaters
Ummm, don't know where else to post this and couldn't find relevant discussion via search.
What do any of you use for garage heating? I would like to hang a propane forced air heater. Any thoughts? |

If what you're talking about is one of those Modine-type hanging propane heaters with a big fan, they work great. They're relatively safe up high, and really blast some heat.
In my own shop-unisulated 24x30 metal bldg on a slab-I use a torpedo heater run on fuel oil-because it was cheap. Its loud, and I need to be anal about fuel leaks etc, but it works great.

Here's a discussion on the same question: 911 Garage Heat
I was going to run ducting from one of my furnaces but was quickly talked out of it. Great info to be had here.

When I used to live where it gets I used one of those quartz tube heaters. Unless you're planning on working around the whole space during winter months, it may make more sense to just heat the basic area that you're working in.

Long Board,
I have an oversized 3 car garage (double wide, and double deep on one side). My bedroom is directly above this massive garage and it actually got a little chilly in there, so I had a Moline Hot-Dawg installed. It hangs from the ceiling in one of the far corners, up and out of the way, and has a seperate thermostat. I love it. I spent the extra time to get the garage door insulated, and sealed up nicely. The heater vents out the roof so I don't have to worry about the fumes. It keeps my garage at what ever temp. I sent the thermostat too. To be honest, I absolutly love it. I have a motorcycle too, and the battery never goes dead during the winter, since it stays nice and warm. It makes working in there possible, and very enjoyable. I think it was right at $1,200 including installation. You can get them cheaper, but I got a nice big one, a little bit of overkill. If you would like I can send you some pictures. Just make sure you don't leave the grage door open accidently, like for example at night, smile. Bill Bill |

..not to mention once the heat is in you'll want to prevent it from leaving. Good isulation in all walls, ceiling and insulated/air-tight garage door(s).
